As the season has continued on, the best teams have slowly begun to reveal themselves. The big thing with the WNBA, of course, is that there are 12 total teams with six from each conference. The best ones move on to the postseason and then try and chase the title.

And so, it’s time again. That time of the week to look at who the top teams in the league are and why they stand in that position.

1. Connecticut Sun

Is it any surprise that Connecticut is at the top? They have been playing a very impressive brand of basketball, getting off to an impressive 8-2 start this season. That being said, there is still a lot of time left in the year, but the early signs are looking good for them.

It very much helps to have the top scoring defense in the game and to have a winning margin of about 8.9. They’re showing an ability to avoid nail-biters and to have to execute on a possession-by-possession basis in crunch time.

Jonquel Jones is averaging 21 points and ten rebounds and has been a tremendous leader. DeWanna Bonner is contributing 16.6 ppg, and three other players are also averaging double-digits.

Don’t let the Sun get too hot.

2. Seattle Storm

When you’re averaging 89 points per game, chances are there is a lot of winning going on. That is why the Storm are currently atop the West, a place they hope to remain. The defense is still leaving a bit to be desired, but they have been a very good team, all things considered.

Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd are both averaging better than 20 points per game to lead the offense. Sue Bird is dishing six assists per game, an impressive total given that she’s now playing in her age-40 campaign.

They are #2 in three-point shooting as a team, at 39.8%. If they can keep that up and ride their stars, a possible Finals trip could be in the cards for them.

Seattle has plenty of championship experience and could well run the playoff gauntlet with relative ease in 2021.

3. Phoenix Mercury

There are several 5-4 teams across the WNBA this season. And one of them happens to be the Phoenix Mercury. The offense is below average, and the defense is right smack in the middle. The team is overall very talented and good enough to make a run this year, though.

With a trio of Skylar Diggins-Smith, Diana Taurasi, and Brittany Griner, they can go toe-to-toe with anybody. You have one of the best ballplayers of all time, combined with a dominant big and a great playmaker. You really can’t ask for much more from any of them.

Finishing off the offensive attack is Kia Nurse, who has been a more-than-capable three-point threat for them. Brianna Turner is blocking an impressive 2.6 shots per game, and if that continues, they will have a lot of success in the coming weeks.

As long as Taurasi is out there playing hard, there is always hope.
