Liverpool vs Burnley Betting Preview

17 August 2021

The second weekend of Premier League action gets underway on Saturday, with Liverpool hosting Burnley at Anfield. Rather predictably, the Reds are heavily favored with a moneyline of -525 while Burnley has a moneyline of +1640. There is also a moneyline of +660 for a draw.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley team is likely still kicking themselves after letting their season opener slip away. The Clarets were comfortably ahead of Brighton after scoring in the second minute of the match. But goals in the 73rd minute and the 78th minute turned things around, giving Burnley a 2-1 defeat to open the season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool began the new campaign in style, beating Norwich City 3-0. The Canaries put up a fight against the Reds, keeping the match 1-0 past the hour mark. But Liverpool created more opportunities and finished its chances better to earn a comfortable road win.

Red Alert

The summer gave Liverpool a chance to recover from all of the injuries that plagued the club last season. Outside of one or two exceptions, the Reds are back to full strength at the start of the season, which became apparent last weekend. Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah both contributed a goal after getting the start, while Roberto Firmino came off the bench to get a goal.

Of course, the biggest addition for the Reds this season is Virgil van Dijk, who missed most of last season with an injury. Liverpool also upgraded its defense with center-back Ibrahima Konate. With a midfield that’s still incredibly deep despite losing Georginio Wijnaldum over the summer, Liverpool looks like a team that’s ready to hit the ground running.

Feel the Burn

There were few silver linings in Burnley’s loss to Bright last week. The Clarets got their only goal from a center back, managed just three shots on target, and only earned 36% of the possession. While the likes of Chris Wood, Jay Rodriguez, and others are capable goal scorers, they didn’t show it against Brighton and can expect even fewer chances against Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Burnley will receive the biggest test against the Reds on the defensive end of the field. For what it’s worth, James Tarkowski and Ben Mee form one of the most underrated center-back tandems in the Premier League. Dyche also knows how to set up his team in a defensive shape that adheres to a disciplined style of play, although that’s not always enough against a team like Liverpool.

River Runs Red

Burnley pulled off a shocking upset of Liverpool last January during a visit to Anfield, but don’t expect a similar result to be in the cards this time around. Even if the Reds aren’t at 100% with their ideal starting lineup in place, they are awfully close, and their attacking band looked dangerous last week. Meanwhile, Burnley could have looked a lot more disciplined defensively last week.

Once the first goal goes in, there’s a good chance things start to fall apart for Burnley. Look for the Liverpool attack to be clicking and put some fantastic goals in the back of the net. Bet on Liverpool to win by multiple goals against Burnley.
