MLB Rankings Recap

We move to the second full week of May in Major League Baseball. We are approaching the Summer, which in many seasons will separate the men from the boys. The standings are opening up a bit in a few divisions. Let’s take a look at the most up to date Dunkel Index Major League Baseball rankings:

Divisional Leaders at The Top

There is no doubt that the divisional leaders should be at the top of the rankings. But, it’s not always the case, but this week it is. The top 5 teams in the rankings all lead their division. The Boston Red Sox are at the top, and lead the AL East by 3.5 games over the New York Yankees.  Next in the rankings are the San Francisco Giants. The Giants hold a 1.5 game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West. The hottest team in baseball is the St. Louis Cardinals. They are third and 2 games up on the Brewers. St. Louis and Milwaukee meet for three this week. Checking in at 4th and 5th in the rankings are the White Sox and the Athletics. Chicago is 19-13 and holds a single game lead in the AL Central, while Oakland is 2 games up on the Astros, at 21-15.

Worst Getting Worse

As is usually the case, the teams at the bottom just keep getting worse. The bottom five teams in the latest rankings are the Detroit Tigers, Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Washington Nationals. The Tigers and Twins are in the same division, but the rest of the teams are at the bottom of their division. Detroit is a Major League Baseball worse 10-24 on the season and 10 games back. Minnesota is not much better at 7 games behind first place. From there - the Rockies got swept in St. Louis, and are falling ast in the NL West. Pittsburgh, lost two out of three to the Cubs, and have dropped to 6 games back, while Washington is just ½ game below Miami in the NL East for the last place.

Free Falling Milwaukee

While they have now won two straight games, the Milwaukee Brewers went free falling a little bit. The Brewers, after winning the first three against the Dodgers, dropped six straight games. They moved to one game over .500, but again have won their last two games. The Brewers are in second place, just ahead of the Cubs in the division. Milwaukee sits at 11th in the rankings, after being inside the Top 5 a week ago. Behind the Brewers is Toronto, who lost two out of three to the Astros. The Blue Jays can mash but need better pitching. Rounding out the Top 15 are Houston, the Mets, and Seattle. The Mets are in first place in the NL East but may have lost Jacob DeGrom to an injury.

We expect another great week of Major League Baseball. There is a noticeable difference this season as opposed to the 2020 season. The crowds are a big deal, and the season seems like more of a real season instead of the short abbreviated season. We anticipate a great 2021 season.
