The PGA Tour returns to Mexico for the final time this year for the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba at the El Camaleon Golf Club in the resort town of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Tournament play begins on Thursday, November 3rd, and concludes on Sunday, November 6th.
The event has been a part of the PGA Tour schedule since 2007. Originally played as an alternate field event alongside the WGC Match Play, the event became a full points tournament in 2014.
Viktor Hovland is a two-time defending champion, with victories in 2020 and last year. He returns this week to defend his title. Hovland knocked off Mexican golfer Carlos Ortiz last season by four shots.
Players in the field will enjoy a $1 million dollar bump in the purse to $8.2 million, with the winner garnering $1.476 million of the total.
The Field
A pair of Top 10 players in the official world golf rankings highlight the full field this week in Mexico. Scottie Scheffler, who held the No. 1 ranking in the world for most of the year, returns to action after a T45 a few weeks ago in South Carolina, now the No. 2 player. World No. 9 Collin Morikawa also returns to action this week.
A two-time winner last season, Tony Finau makes his first appearance in the 2022-23 season. Past FedEx Cup champions Billy Horschel and Justin Rose join a strong field at El Camaleon.
The Course
The El Camaleon Golf Club is a par 71 that stretches 7,034 yards in distance. A resort-style course, the property gives players numerous opportunities to post low scores.
Stay out of the penalty areas off the tee and find the large greens with approach shots that will give players the chances needed for birdie opportunities. The average winning score over the four-day tournament over the last eight years has hovered at or over 20-under par.
