WNBA Power Rankings

The WNBA Playoffs started last Thursday but will kick into full gear beginning Tuesday. With the top four teams left, it’s time to take a look at where each one stands in the latest version of the power rankings.

There should be no surprise at the top, but there could be some intrigue. Read on.

4. Chicago Sky

Somebody has to occupy the last spot. Even a team that is riding high like the Chicago Sky. They didn’t have any kind of issues disposing of their first two opponents, though. Originally the #6 seed when the postseason opened up, they have looked like a team that cares not of that.

They went and took care of business at home against Dallas with an 81-64 win. And then they followed suit with an 89-76 win over the talented Lynx on Sunday to eliminate them as well. Five players scored in double figures; they came up with an impressive 11 steals on the defensive end.

The addition of Candace Parker has really been working wonders.

3. Phoenix Mercury

Las Vegas will not have fun playing against Phoenix. With two stars and a third who is still playing at a high level in her advanced age, the Mercury are a tough out. They held off the Liberty and then pulled an upset in Seattle against the defending champion Storm.

Brittney Griner creates matchup problems for the defenses, while Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith both make shots from every inch of the court. Plus, there’s Sophie Cunningham, who is an absolute sniper on the court.

They have a real chance to win the title, and they are just three wins away from reaching the finals. Can they pull it off as a lower seed?

2. Las Vegas Aces

It’s been a week since they last played, but it was a very good year for Las Vegas. The regular season saw them doing plenty of winning, making life tough on opponents all year. They went an impressive 24-8, leading the WNBA with 89 points per game. The offense is incredible.

Seven different players averaged in double-digits as they proved their depth. And they did all of this without 5X All-Star Ange; McCoughtry, too. At the end of the day, they have what many teams don’t. Size to go up with Griner.

The Cambage-Griner matchup will go a long way toward determining their fate.

1. Connecticut Sun

On July 3, the Indiana Fever defeated the Sun 73-67. They have played 14 games since that day, and they have won every single one of them. Things have turned around for the better, as their rhythm has come in and been there.

They are led by the ever-talented Jonquel Jones, who had an MVP-caliber year. Plus, they led the league in defense, allowing just 69 points per contest. The fact is, they averaged ten less per night than the Aces and still had more regular-season victories.

Look for Jones, DeWanna Bonner, and Jasmine Thomas to use their shooting prowess to try and help their team advance in a very tough series.
