WNBA Power Rankings

08 July 2021

Another week is in the books, and so we look at the WNBA once again. Believe it or not, everything is pretty much the same as it was before, Multiple weeks in a row have seen everything stay practically identical. No new teams are moving in, though there is a slight change at the top.

As the breakdown for the week comes in, let’s examine where things stand.

1) Las Vegas Aces

The Las Vegas Aces are riding high right now, as we are a few short weeks away from the Olympic break. The sixth man this year here is Kelsey Plum, who did some great things as a starter pre-injury a few seasons ago. She will be repping her team in the Olympics in 3v3.

A’ja Wilson has been playing some incredible basketball this year, while five other players are averaging in double figures. There is not another team in the league with a scoring balance like that, as the wins have continued to pour in left and right.

Liz Cambage has continued to do her thing in and around the basket, serving as a terrific rim projector as well. As long as they can stay healthy, they should be able to get things done and make it to the Finals.

2) Seattle Storm

Sue Bird has continued to climb the ranks, her strong play propelling Seattle to win after win. They are tied with the Aces at 14-4, and will be hoping that 2021 will see them get another championship. There have been a few years where the team has been unstoppable, and this is looking like another one of those.

Breanna Stewart’s game is lacking holes, as she is persisting through it all. Her scoring is staying up, while she has been able to grab every available rebound. Her passing has been solid but she does need to up the assist totals. She and Bird have been the driving force behind all their success.

They will need some bench scoring down the line, but for now, they keep winning with good defense.

3) Connecticut Sun

Of course, the Sun find their way in here again. Jonquel Jones is leading an impressive attack for them, as they remain atop the East. At 12-6, they are winning all the games needed in a conference that is not too impressive. They’re not playing great ball at all right now. They do need to step up, but are the No. 3 team in the league still.

They have got four different players scoring 10+ points per game, and yet the balance could still be better. Bonner and Brionna Jones have had some terrific performances. The issue come playoff time is going to be about their bench. Just like the Storm in the West, they lack a sixth man.

They have got talent up the wazoo in that starting unit, but it is not going to be enough to get them to the WNBA Finals. It takes a lot of work to get that far, so more is going to need to go their way for it to be done.
