WNBA Power Rankings

The NBA Playoffs continue to stay exciting. And the WNBA season continues to provide tremendous entertainment for hoop fans everywhere. There is a lot of star power and some good balance of stars around the league, making parity an achievable goal.

Let’s take a look at some of the best teams in the league and why they’re playing so well.

Seattle Storm

All they do is win. Quite literally. At 11-2, the Seattle Storm have the WNBA’s best record, and it comes as absolutely no surprise. Given all the titles they have won in recent years, watching them continue to keep it rolling is a sign that greatness doesn’t just disappear. It really does not matter how old Sue Bird gets. She’s still an elite floor general.

Breanna Stewart is having yet another dominant campaign for her team. Jewell Loyd had been a great sidekick, averaging 19 points per ballgame. That 1-2 punch, with Bird creating open looks for everybody, has been absolutely lethal.

Everybody is calling for Seattle to get a basketball team in the form of the Sonics. To all of you, stop disrespecting the WNBA champs. The Storm will stay at the top for quite some time.

Las Vegas Aces

After a 4-0 week, the Las Vegas Aces make their first appearance in the weekly power rankings. And honestly, good for them. Bill Laimbeer has done a very good coaching job since taking over for the expansion team, keeping them competitive. They had a number of #1 overall picks to help the strong start, but they’re all playing well.

Between A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young, they do not lack dominant talent. Liz Cambage has been averaging 15 and eight, plus blocking two shots per game. And Kelsey Plum is healthy again and slowly starting to regain her footing. Chelsea Gray has also been great at PG, dishing out more than six assists per game.

The conference finals in the West could well feature the storm and the Aces this year. Watch out for this team. If they’re cooking like this right now, just wait until a few weeks from now. They’re scintillating.

Connecticut Sun

Of course, the Sun keep their spot in the top-3 for a third-straight week. At 8-3 and boasting the best defense in the league, it is no surprise. Connecticut is also atop the East through the first month of the season, a great sign for a team that is going nowhere but up. Jonquel Jones and DeWanna Bonner have continued to play at a high level here.

Jasmine Thomas and Brianna Jones are combining to average 23 points per game. Each averaging in double-digits. And so, there are five Sun players scoring 9+ per. Jonquel Jones is leading the way with a 22 and 10 nightly line, Bonner averaging 16 and seven boards.

They rank #3 in the WNBA at 37.6% from three as a team. They have plenty of sharpshooters outside and good size patrolling in the interior with Jones. This is a team built to win and could well be representing the East in the 2021 Finals.
