Where Does Andy Reid Rank Among All-Time NFL Coaching Greats?
26 February 2023

Now that the Kansas City Chiefs have won their second Super Bowl in recent years, the legacy of head coach Andy Reid has come into question. While Patrick Mahomes is a big reason that the Chiefs have been able to win two titles, it has been Reid that has been at the helm.
Before Reid was able to guide the Chiefs to a Super Bowl title, many considered him one of the best coaches to have never won a Super Bowl. That’s not a distinction that any coach wants to be remembered for, and Reid was able to remove himself from that list.
Now people are starting to wonder if Reid is one of the best coaches in NFL history, and that’s a fair question to ask. The NFL has been loaded with great coaches throughout history, though, and two Super Bowl titles still doesn’t compete with some of the other coaches.
You could make a strong argument that Reid is one of the top 10 NFL coaches of all time, but you really can’t go any further than that at this time. There have been many NFL coaches that have won at least two titles, and some had to do it with a much tougher route.
Great in Philly
While Reid is always going to be remembered for his recent work with the Kansas City Chiefs, that’s not where he got his start. He was a phenomenal head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles as well, but he just wasn’t able to get his team over the hump.
It was with the Eagles that Reid became known as an offensive genius and a coach that was willing to take big risks at every turn. Quarterback Donovan McNabb was delivering for Reid during his time in Philadelphia, but they just ran into some great teams in the Super Bowl.
When discussing the legacy of Andy Reid, you have to include his work with the Eagles, as he was pretty impressive in leading that team.
Not Even Best Active
One thing that you have to consider when looking at the legacy of Andy Reid is the fact that he isn’t even the best active head coach. That title would belong to Bill Belichick, and he is arguably the best coach in NFL history.
While Reid has picked up a pair of Super Bowl titles of late, Belichick seemingly won the Super Bowl every single year for a 20-year stretch.
Reid’s Not Done
Andy Reid isn’t done yet, though, and he could easily add a couple of more titles to his resume before he retires. While it’s pretty clear that Reid is in the top 10 at this time, he could move all the way up to top-five before he hangs up his whistle.
It’s unclear how many more years Reid wants to coach, but he is going to have a chance at winning a Super Bowl every year as long as Patrick Mahomes is at quarterback. If Reid picks up at least one more Super Bowl, then he cements himself as a top-five coach of all time.
