West Virginia Mountaineers at Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

20 September 2022

We have reached Week 4 of the 2022 college football season, and things actually begin on Thursday night with a big game. The Virginia Tech Hokies host the West Virginia Mountaineers for a huge showdown to kick things off.

West Virginia has had a disappointing start to the season as they come into this game with a record of 1-2. The Mountaineers did pick up a dominant win in Week 3, but they have to prove that they can beat a difficult opponent for once.

Virginia Tech was upset by Old Dominion on the road in Week 1, but this team has bounced back with two straight wins. The Hokies are hoping to carry some momentum into ACC action by beating their rivals to the West.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are 2.5-point betting favorites over the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday night.

West Virginia Can Be Explosive

West Virginia comes into this game having scored at least 31 points in each of their three matchups this season. The Mountaineers are averaging 513 yards of total offense per game, and they will be trying to speed up the tempo in this one.

Running back CJ Donaldson has 274 rushing yards and six touchdowns through the first six games, and he will have the ball in his hands a ton in this one. The Mountaineers have also been throwing the ball well, but they will face a good secondary in this one.

West Virginia has to find a way to be better defensively if they are going to win some more games. The Mountaineers are allowing 33 points per game, and that won’t work in this one.

Hokies Looking to Defend

Virginia Tech doesn’t have the offensive firepower to try and outscore West Virginia, but they do have a defense to get things done. The Hokies are holding opponents to just 12 points per game, and that unit will attempt to take over this one.

Running the football has been a bit of a challenge for Virginia Tech this season as well, but they are still averaging 137 yards per game. Running back Keshawn King will be featured plenty in this game, and he will need a big night for the Hokies.

It’s easier to take over a game defensively when playing at home, but Virginia Tech also has to prove that it can make big plays through the air to pull off this upset.

Hokies Hang On For Upset

These two teams couldn’t be built more different as each is going to approach this matchup in a different manner. The team that is able to establish their identity should pick up the win, and the Hokies have the advantage of hosting this one.

West Virginia has been putting up some huge offensive numbers this season, but they won’t have an easy time scoring on Thursday night. Virginia Tech continues to look for more offense, but it will be their defense that takes over this game and allows them to win it.

Bet the Virginia Tech Hokies moneyline as they are able to take care of business at home and knock off West Virginia.
