Wells Fargo Championship Betting Preview/Prop Picks

03 May 2022

The 2022 Wells Fargo Championship is another “unicorn” of an event on the PGA Tour. For the third straight Tour tournament to have something unique about it, this event will take place at TPC Potomac for the first time.

Many betting favorites are expected to perform well here since the field is not strong, but it is slightly stronger than the Mexico Open. Below you can see which golfers have a chance to win.

Tournament Details

Date: May 5–8, 2022
Course: TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm
Watch on: GOLF, CBS
Purse: $9,000,000

Betting Overview

This event will be played at TPC Potomac for the first time ever. Other events, like the Quicken Loans tournament, were featured here in 2017 and 2018.

However, this course is a bit different than playing at Quail Hollow. Many golfers have either never played at Potomac or have little experience doing so.

The key here will be great iron play, and strokes gained approach. Driving will not favor the heavy hitters for this course, as it is roughly 400 yards shorter than Quail Hollow.

Head to Head Matchup to Watch

Rory McIlroy (-29.255) and Tony Finau (-34.324) will have a lot of attention put on them. Both golfers are the highest ranked in the field, with Mcllroy being seventh and Finau being 18th.

Mcllroy is the defending champ, but this is a different course. As for Finau, he is coming off excellent play to give him some momentum.

Golfers That Could Win

Keegan Bradley (-30.019) is a great pick for the value. He has four top 12 finishes and is a great driver. Even though driving is not a priority here, it does not hurt his chances of setting up a second shot to get close to the green.

Keith Mitchell (-32.728) has to be one of the best value options here with a real chance to win. He had a third and eighth-place finish when this event was at Quail Hollow. In addition, he has four top 10 finishes this year and ranks second in strokes gained off the tee.

Tony Finau (-34.324) is coming off of a second-place tie at the Mexico Open. With his outstanding final day performance in that event, he has a great shot to take this one with positive momentum in his favor.

Potential Winning Pick

The last time fans saw Rory McIlroy (-29.255), he was putting up a record-tying performance at the Masters. This course compliments his game well, which should translate to a victory.

Prop Picks

Tournament Matchup: Marc Leishman (-110) OVER Tyrrell Hatton

Leishman has missed only one cut in 13 tournaments this year and has seven Top 25 finishes. He currently ranks 14th in birdie average (4.33) and 31st in scoring average (70.416).

After finishing 52nd at The Masters, Hatton failed to crack the Top 20 at either the RBC Heritage (tie for 26th) or Zurich Classic (tie for 21st). He ranks 34th in birdie average (4.17) and 47th in scoring average (70.663).

With Leishman rated No. 3 in this week’s Dunkel Index and Hatton at No. 4, these two should be on the leaderboard all weekend, but take Leishman (-110) to get the better of this matchup.

Tournament Matchup: Keegan Bradley (-120) OVER Seamus Power

Bradley has finished in the Top 10 in each of his last two events at the Valero Texas Open (tie for 8th) and Zurich Classic (tie for 4th). He’s ranked 31st in driving distance (307.3).

After opening with a 65, Power missed the cut at the Zurich Classic and has now missed the cut in six of his 17 events. He’s rated 102nd in driving distance (298.1).

With Bradley ranked No. 2 in this week’s Dunkel Index and Power at No. 7, take the longer-hitting Bradley (-120) to have the edge over Power at TPC Potomac.
