Don’t let the excitement of the NBA Playoffs keep you from watching WNBA basketball. The league is off to an exciting start in 2021, with Kia Nurse knocking down a game-winning 29-footer to lift the Mercury on national TV just a few days ago.
 
The fact that only 12 teams are in the league means that there is great parity. As a result, everybody can have big-time talent. So, let’s talk about who the alphas are.

Seattle Storm

 There should be no doubt as to which team resides at the top. There is star power, both young and old, on this team, and the current five-game winning streak is enough to propel them to the top of the list. Whether we’re talking Sue Bird or Breanna Stewart, this team is lethal.
 
Stewart is averaging 23.3 points per game, good for #2 in the league. She’s also averaging 9.7 rebounds, good for #2. They’ve got Bird dishing 5.9 assists per ballgame, still making sure her teammates get opportunities to eat. Jewell Loyd is pouring in 19 a night, and Stewart is blocking two shots per game.
 
The goal will be the same as always, to win a title. So far, so good.

Connecticut Sun

Despite losing on a buzzer-beating heave the other day, the Sun are still in good shape. At 7-2, they are atop the East and hoping to keep things buzzing into the weekend. Jonquel Jones is leading the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds per game, to go with 1.7 steals and 1.2 blocks.
 
DeWanna Bonner has continued to show her shooting prowess, averaging 17 points per contest and knocking in 18 threes in nine games. Jasmine Thomas and Natasha Hiedeman have also shown a smooth shooting stroke, propelling the team with the long ball.
 
The rotation is pretty slim for Connecticut, but they know exactly what they’re doing. 0-3 all-time in the Finals, they hope to finally claim a championship in 2021.

New York Liberty

 The team you have been waiting to read about has finally entered the chat. At 5-2, the Liberty are off to a strong start, playing with the fastest pace in the WNBA. And of course, Sabrina Ionescu being healthy has been a significant part of their jump after a horrid campaign a year ago.
 
Triple-doubles are not a common occurrence in this league, but Ionescu doesn’t care about the norm. She has been averaging 16-7-7 this year, making better than 45% of her threes. On a roster where nobody is older than 28, she has done a great job of becoming a veteran leader at a very young age.
 
Betnijah Laney has been a superstar, too, leading the way with better than 22 points per contest. She’s also dishing five assists and shooting 52% from the field. When you add in a healthy Natasha Howard, you have got yourself a serious big three.
 
Everybody is going to tune in for Sabrina. But, they will stay to see the great team around her. The Liberty are seeking their first Finals trip since 2002.
