TOUR Championship Betting Preview

01 September 2020

After a thrilling playoff at the BMW Championship outside of Chicago, the 30 best golfers in the world head to East Lake in Atlanta for the TOUR Championship. Last year, they changed the format of this event, and it gives the guys at the top a little advantage heading into the four day event. This tournament starts on Friday, and will finish on Monday - Labor Day. Dustin Johnson is the favorite, but we are going to fade him this weekend. Let’s take a look at our TOUR Championship Betting Preview:

Jon Rahm +300

What a comeback at the BMW! Rahm was down and nearly out after the first day in Chicago. Now, Rahm sits just two strokes back as this event starts. Rahm has been steady all season long. Not only did Rahm win the BMW, back in mid July Rahm took down the Memorial, despite a fourth round 75. The amazing number for Rahm, even though this is not a cut event, he made it 14 out of 15 times this season. Impressive.

Rory Mcllroy +2200

Mcllroy finished 12th after shooting 71 on the final day at Olympia Fields. That’s disappointing, as he was winning the event early. Rory is a two time FedEx Cup winner at East Lake, but will start further back than usual this week. Rory was perfect in making cuts this season, but came away with just one win. That’s disappointing for him, and maybe will fuel his fire. The only problem for Rory, he will start 7 strokes behind DJ.

Justin Thomas +500

Sitting just three strokes back of DJ, and one back of Jon Rahm is Justin Thomas. He has gone quiet since playing well in Memphis. His history at East Lake has been pretty good with a T3 last season, and T6, 2nd, and T7 the previous three seasons. Justin Thomas shot a final round 68 at the BMW, which pushed him up to 25th.

Webb Simpson +900

Simpson sat out last weekend, and it may have been a good decision. He avoided the high scoring carnage, and is now well rested. He fell one spot in the standings, to fourth place. He will start at 6 under par, and four strokes behind Dustin Johnson. Webb is looking for his fourth Top 5 finish of his career. This guy has a great all around golf game, which should fare well at East Lake.

Others in Consideration

Bryson DeChambeau +2200

Bryson will start 4 under par, and 6 back of the leader here. All the muscle this season has put together a nice season. If you are looking for a guy that can get Greens in Regulation with the best of them, this is your man. Bryson has seen himself in the Top 10, 10 times this season, including his win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and his 4th place finish at the PGA Championship. Can he catch six strokes? Questionable, but seeing him at +2200 gives bettors some life.

Lanto Griffin +35000

Lanto has put together a nice season this year. 4 Top 10 finishes, 20 out of 26 made cuts, and a win on the tour, and most people still have not heard of this guy. His 10th place finish at the BMW was impressive, and he even finished Top 20 at the PGA Championship. We look forward to seeing the true breakout of this guy, and why not at East Lake? He is a true underdog.

This is going to be a great weekend of golf. Can Dustin Johnson keep the lead and remain at the top? Will Jon Rahm continue his redhot golf and come away with the title after chasing Dustin Johnson down? Or will someone else emerge and get red hot and win at East Lake. Enjoy the weekend, and the golf!
