There are some great college football teams in the Big 12 Conference, and two of them will be meeting up in Week 4. The Texas Tech Red Raiders host the Texas Longhorns, and this matchup always seems to be a battle every year.
Texas comes into this game with a record of 2-1, but the one loss came at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide by a point. The Longhorns can get back into the College Football Playoff race, but they are going to have to run the table in the Big 12.
Texas Tech suffered a 13-point loss on the road to NC State in Week 3, but they have been playing well to begin the year. The Red Raiders could jump into the Top 25 by beating the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Conference opener.
The Texas Longhorns are 4.5-point betting favorites over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in this Big 12 Conference showdown.
Texas Can Dominate on Defense
Offense usually wins in the Big 12 Conference, but Texas has the ability to get the job done in a very different way. The Longhorns are giving up just 16 points per game this season, and that unit was even able to shut down the Crimson Tide offense for much of the game.
Quarterback Quinn Ewers could potentially be back for this game, and his return would be a huge boost to an offense that will have to score. Texas has scored 37 points per game, but they did most of their damage against a pair of bad teams.
Running back Bijan Robinson will be a huge key in this game as he has rushed for 311 yards and five touchdowns on the year. Texas will want to control time of possession in this showdown with Texas Tech.
Red Raiders Want to Throw
Texas Tech looks like a typical Big 12 Conference team in the fact that they are going to throw the ball deep a ton in this game. The Red Raiders are scoring 36.7 points per game, and they have put up 373 passing yards per game through the air.
Quarterback Donovan Smith is having a big year for the Red Raiders as he has thrown for 785 yards and seven touchdowns. Smith has also tossed five interceptions, and this team has to find a way to mix in some runs as well.
The Texas Tech defense will be tested in this one, but that unit has given up just 82 rushing yards per game in 2022.
Red Raiders Stun the Longhorns
The Texas football program always seems to suffer a bad loss at some point in every season, and this game on Saturday just feels like it will be that time. Even though the Longhorns aren’t huge favorites in this game, Texas should still come away with the win based on overall talent.
Texas Tech has really struggled on defense this season, but they have an offense that is going to give Texas some trouble. The Red Raiders will be able to keep their crowd into the game for the entire four quarters, and they will come up with a big play late that propels them to a win.
Take the upset in this game as the Texas Tech Red Raiders stun the Texas Longhorns to kick off Big 12 Conference action.
Prop Picks
Texas Tech (-125) OVER 26.5 Points
Texas Tech averaged 30.5 points per game last season on offense, which ranked No. 43 in the FBS. That average remained relatively steady at 30.0 points per game at home. That average increased to 28.0 points per game on the road. Scores have gone OVER in each of the Red Raiders’ last four games versus Texas.
With Dunkel predicting a Texas Tech win by the score of 34-31, take the Red Raiders (-125) to finish OVER their Vegas team total of 26.5 points against the Longhorns.
