St. Louis Blues at Arizona Coyotes Betting Preview/Player Prop

18 October 2021

The 2021-22 NHL season is underway, and things have already gotten off to a fast start around the league. On Monday night, it will be the Arizona Coyotes hosting the St. Louis Blues in what could be an interesting Western Conference matchup.

St. Louis has played just one game so far this season, and the Blues were able to pick up an impressive 5-3 win against the Colorado Avalanche. The Blues were expected to be a playoff contender this season, and they have looked the part through one game.

Arizona has gone 0-1-1 to begin the season, and there isn’t a ton of hope in the Coyotes turning this thing around. Life in the Central Division is not going to be kind to the Coyotes, but they will be playing on home ice for the first time.

The St. Louis Blues are the big moneyline favorites at -177 in this matchup with the Arizona Coyotes.

St. Louis is Going to Score

The St. Louis Blues are going to be a high-scoring team this season, as evident by their five goals in the season opener. David Perron had two goals for the Blues in that win, and one of them came on the power play.

Goaltending was a bit of a problem for the Blues a season ago, but the team is hoping that they will get good play in the net all season. Jordan Binnington gave up just three goals in the win against the Colorado Avalanche, and that’s about all you can ask against that team.

Coyotes Keep Making Mistakes

The Arizona Coyotes are going to struggle to beat teams when they are at even strength, but this team has shot themselves in the foot too often this season. Arizona has already racked up 24 penalty minutes, and they have given up three power-play goals against.

Scoring goals has also been an issue for Arizona, as they have just three of them through the first two weeks. Johan Larsson leads the team with two points, and Andrew Ladd has lit the lamp once for the Coyotes.

The Coyotes can’t afford to get into a high-scoring affair with the Blues, but they also must play this game with some discipline.

Blues Beat Up on Coyotes

Arizona is not expected to be a strong team this season, and this is going to be a tough matchup for the Coyotes. It’s been a struggle for this team to score goals so far this season, and this is a matchup that could get out of hand in a hurry.

St. Louis scored five goals in their first game of the season, and that offense should have another big night in this one. The Blues are still looking for some better play in the net, but that isn’t going to be a major issue in this one.

Most hockey games are hard to predict, but that isn’t the case at all with this matchup. Bet the St. Louis Blues -2.5 as they win this game by at least three goals over Arizona on Monday night.

Player Prop

Phil Kessel (-135) Over 0.5 Points

Kessel is in the final year of his 8-year, $64 million contract and there is already speculation that the Coyotes could move him before the March 21 trade deadline.

There’s no question the right winger's numbers have declined since he was shipped to Arizona by the Penguins back in 2019. He had only 38 points in 70 games in 2019-20, his lowest scoring effort since his second season with the Bruins in 2007-08.

Last year, however, he did have a bounce back of sorts as he led the Coyotes in goals (20) and points (43). His shooting percentage (17.4) was the highest of his career.

The 34-year-old veteran would certainly be an attractive piece for a contender. With that in mind, we’ll stick with Kessel (-135) to continue to be productive and go over 0.5 points tonight versus the Blues.
