San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres Betting Preview/Prop Picks

08 August 2022

NL West rivals meet up on Monday night to begin a series as the San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants. This past week was rough for both of these teams, and the playoff push has begun in Major League Baseball.

The Giants won two straight games entering Monday night, but those wins came against the lowly Oakland Athletics. The Giants are just 53-55 on the year, and it will take a big run to get into a playoff position.

The Padres boast a record of 61-50, but they have also lost four straight games. The Padres are 31-23 at home this season, and they need to play well at Petco Park to stay atop the Wild Card race.

The San Diego Padres are the moneyline betting favorites at -185 over the San Francisco Giants.

Giants Do Have Some Power

The San Francisco Giants have struggled to find consistent offense this season, but they have belted 127 home runs as a team. San Francisco has some big power in the middle of the lineup, but they just haven’t been able to string together hits.

Joc Pederson is having a big year for San Francisco as he leads the team with 17 home runs. Injuries have impacted this offense, but the Giants simply have to deliver from here on out.

Alex Wood starts on Monday night, and he is just 7-9 with a 4.42 ERA on the year. Wood will need to pitch well to give his team a chance to win this game.

Pitching Letting Padres Down

The San Diego Padres have given up a total of 27 runs during this four-game losing streak, and that’s simply not good enough to get the job done. Blake Snell is set to start in this game, but he has gone just 4-5 with a 4.16 ERA on the year.

San Diego acquired Juan Soto at the Trade Deadline, and his presence was supposed to make this team nearly unstoppable on offense. The Padres scored just four total runs in losing three games in Los Angeles, and that’s not going to get the job done.

Manny Machado is having a big year for the Padres as he leads the way with 19 home runs, 60 RBIs, and a .289 batting average.

Padres Pickup a Win

The San Diego Padres are returning home after a humbling weekend, and this is a game that they simply have to win. San Diego was supposed to take off after the Trade Deadline, but that just hasn’t been the case up to this point.

San Francisco has been wildly inconsistent this season, and beating the best teams in the league hasn’t been easy for the Giants. Don’t expect a ton of offense from either team in this game, but it will be the Padres that eventually break through late to take control.

Bet the San Diego Padres -185 as they win the series opener in a tight game over the San Francisco Giants.

Prop Picks

San Francisco (-140) UNDER 3.5 Runs

San Diego is allowing 4.08 runs per 9 innings on defense, which ranks No. 9 in the league. That average decreases to 3.65  runs per 9 innings at home. Scores have gone UNDER in eight of the Padres’ last 12 Monday games.

With Dunkel predicting a San Diego home victory by the score of 4-3, take the Giants (-140) to finish UNDER their Vegas team total of 3.5 runs against the Padres.

San Diego (-140) Most Hits

San Francisco is allowing 8.53 hits per 9 innings on defense, which ranks No. 23 in the league. San Diego is allowing 7.83 hits per 9 innings on defense, which ranks No. 8 in the league. That average decreases to 7.37 hits per 9 innings at home.

With Dunkel predicting a Padres home win holding the Giants UNDER their Vegas run total, take San Diego (-140) to finish with more hits than San Francisco.

Blake Snell (-175) UNDER 2.5 Earned Runs

Snell has allowed 31 earned runs in 67.0 innings pitched this season for an ERA of 4.16. The San Diego left hander has an ERA of 3.69 (16 earned runs in 39.0 IP) at home compared with 4.82 (15.0 earned runs in 28.0 IP) on the road.

With Dunkel predicting the final score staying UNDER the Vegas run total, take Snell (-175) to finish UNDER 2.5 earned runs allowed against San Francisco.
