The NL West is one of the most competitive divisions in Major League Baseball. Today, we'll see two teams from the division face off as the San Francisco Giants face the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Giants, with a record of 64-68, have won their last three games. Most recently, the Giants earned a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The question is, will the streak continue today?
The Los Angeles Dodgers are arguably the best team in baseball. With a record of 92-41, the Dodgers have performed incredibly well this season.
They've won their last two games, both against the San Diego Padres. In one of these games, the Dodgers beat the Padres 9-4. As the leader of the NL West, the Dodgers come into this game as -218 favorites.
San Francisco Giants: Webb gets the nod for the Giants
The San Francisco Giants are sending out one of their best pitchers to start tonight's game. Logan Webb, with a record of 11-8, will take the mound for the Giants.
Webb has an ERA of 2.89 over the course of 165 innings, an impressive feat, to be sure. In that time, Webb has thrown 137 strikeouts and allowed only ten home runs. He'll need to be at his best against Los Angeles.
The Giants have a team batting average of .234, ranking 23rd in the league. This is where we see a big problem for the Giants. They have a pretty great on-base percentage of .318, however, which ranks 12th in the league.
The batters did great in their series against Philadelphia, scoring as many as 13 runs in a game. Tonight, they'll need a bit of that magic.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Heaney takes on the Giants' batters
This NL West game isn't going to be an easy win for the Dodgers. This season, Los Angeles has gone 47-17 at home, which is a great record.
However, the Giants have been able to get a few wins over them this season. Still, the Dodgers have gone 8-0 against the San Francisco Giants in their last eight meetings. The Dodgers are also 13-2 in their last 15 home games.
On the mound for the Dodgers tonight is Andrew Heaney, who is 2-1 this season. Heaney has an ERA of 2.12 over the course of 46.2 innings. He's thrown several fewer innings than Logan Webb, but he's likely a bit fresher as well.
This should allow him to pitch late into the game and help his team secure a win. So, are they the better bet, or should you take the Giants?
San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Pick
The San Francisco Giants have a record of 27-36 on the road. This record, in our opinion, makes them a bad pick. They've also lost their last eight games against the Dodgers, and the Dodgers are 47-17 at home.
The pitching edge goes to the Giants, but batting definitely goes to the Dodgers, who have a .261 batting average. We'll also take the over in this game since the total has gone over in six of the Giants' last seven games.
DunkelIndex Free Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -218, OVER
Prop Picks
LA Dodgers (-120) OVER 4.5 Runs
LA is averaging 5. Ru38ns per 9 innings on offense, which ranks No. 1 in MLB. That average increases to 5.50 runs per 9 innings on the road. Scores have gone OVER in each of the Dodgers’ last five home games.
With Dunkel predicting an LA victory by the score of 6-4, take the Dodgers (-120) to finish OVER their Vegas team total of 4.5 runs against the Giants.
Evan Longoria (+110) OVER 0.5 Runs Scored
Longoria has scored 29 runs in 70 games played so far this season. The Giants third baseman has scored 3 runs in 12 at-bats with an OBP of .308 against the Dodgers.
With Dunkel predicting the final score going OVER the Vegas run total, take Longoria (+110) to finish OVER 0.5 runs scored versus the Dodgers.
