San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals Preview
18 September 2021
The St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres are set to continue their series on Saturday evening at Busch Stadium. Both teams are fighting for a Wild Card spot in the National League, and this game is going to have a massive impact on the playoff picture.
San Diego was supposed to be a World Series contender this season, but they come into this game with a record of just 76-71. With a series-opening loss on Friday night, the Padres are now trying to track down the Cardinals for a playoff spot.
St. Louis looked buried at the Trade Deadline, but this veteran team has become one of the better teams in the National League. The Cardinals have a history of playoff success as a Wild Card team, and they have taken control of that race.
The St. Louis Cardinals are the betting favorites on the moneyline at -126 for this game.
Padres Must Score
If the San Diego Padres are going to sneak into the playoffs, then they will have to do it with their offense. San Diego scored just two runs on Friday night, but that came after looking really explosive on offense against the Giants.
Fernando Tatis Jr. leads the Padres with 39 home runs and a .286 batting average, and he needs to step up in the final few weeks. There are some weak spots in the Padres’ everyday lineup, but they can cause some trouble when they are swinging it well.
Yu Darvish starts for San Diego on Saturday night, and he has not lived up to the hype so far in a Padres uniform. Darvish has really been struggling of late, and he needs to deliver a dominant performance for his team.
Wainwright Winning For Cardinals
Adam Wainwright isn’t going to win the NL Cy Young Award this season, but he should be in the conversation. The veteran is 16-7 with a 2.88 ERA this season, and he has pitched extremely well over the last few months.
St. Louis has also really started to swing the bats well, and Dylan Carlson hit a pair of home runs in the win on Friday night. The Cardinals don’t want to get into a slugfest with the Padres, but this offense has started to heat up.
There are still some concerns in the bullpen for St. Louis, but getting a big lead takes some pressure off of that unit.
Padres Pitch Better in Win
It has been a rough few months for that Padres pitching staff, and Yu Darvish has been included in those struggles. Darvish is going to step up for his team and deliver a dominating performance to shut down the St. Louis Cardinals.
St. Louis has been on a remarkable run behind Adam Wainwright, but the veteran is going to run out of steam in this one. Wainwright has been known to give up some long balls, and that could be a problem in this one.
This is going to be a much more competitive than the series opener, and the visitors will also win it. Bet the San Diego Padres moneyline as they win game two of the series to even things up against the St. Louis Cardinals.
