For the Penn State Nittany Lions and USC Trojans, a trip to the Rose Bowl looked like an impossible dream at the start of the season. Penn State, which had been racked by controversy and NCAA sanctions, looked nothing like a national contender while losing to Michigan (49-10) in Week 4. Not to be outdone, the Trojans were embarrassed during their 52-6 loss to Alabama in Week 1 and started out the season 1-3. But the two teams finished strong down the stretch and head to Pasadena as two of the hottest teams in the nation.
