Purdue Boilermakers vs. Michigan Wolverines Big Ten Championship Betting Preview

03 December 2022 By Tyler Vaysman

The 2022 Big Ten Championship Game is set, and this was not the matchup that most were anticipating taking place. It will be the Purdue Boilermakers from the West Division taking on the Michigan Wolverines from the East Division.

Purdue is going to come into this game with a ton of momentum after winning three straight games to clinch the West Division. The Boilermakers are still just 8-4 on the year, and they haven’t always put together a consistent effort.

Michigan comes into this game with a perfect 12-0 record, and they just blew out the Ohio State Buckeyes in their most recent game. The Wolverines are the reigning Big Ten champions, and this team might be better than a season ago.

The Michigan Wolverines are massive 15.5-point betting favorites over the Purdue Boilermakers in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Purdue Must Play Defense

There is a path for Purdue to win this game on Saturday night, but it’s all going to start on the defensive side of the football. The Boilermakers are allowing 23 points per game this season, and they are facing a Michigan team that can be explosive.

Running the football would be a good strategy for Purdue to use, but they are averaging just 125 rushing yards per game. The Boilermakers are going to try to throw their way to a win, and quarterback Aidan O’Connell will have to be the star.

O’Connell threw for 3,124 yards and 22 touchdowns during the regular season, but he’s not afraid to take chances. Purdue can’t afford to have their QB throw the ball away in this one.

Michigan Features a Complete Package

There just aren’t any glaring weaknesses when looking at this Michigan team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Michigan is scoring close to 40 points per game, and they are able to get it done with a balanced attack.

Running back Blake Corum racked up 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, but he will not be suiting up for this game. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy had a huge game in the season finale, and he is a dual threat at that position.

The Michigan offense tends to get all of the credit for the Wolverines, but the defense is also holding opponents to just 12.7 points per game.

Purdue Plays Well in Loss

The Purdue passing attack has been pretty impressive all season long, and they are going to connect on some big plays in this one. Purdue has struggled to get stops at times this season, but they are catching a break with Blake Corum being out of this game.

Michigan was dominant in the win over Ohio State, but that hasn’t been the case all season long. The Wolverines will play a physical style of football in this game, and that is eventually going to wear down the Boilermakers.

Take the 15.5 points and bet on the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday night, as they are able to play Michigan tough, but it will be the Wolverines that win the conference title.
