Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Betting Preview/Prop Picks

29 May 2022

The New York Mets will host the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday Night Baseball to wrap up a three-game series. New York has won the first two games over their NL East rivals and have done so in pretty convincing fashion.

The Phillies have actually lost four of their last five games, and they are now just 21-26 on the year. Philadelphia has gone just 10-13 away from home, and things have not been going well on this current road trip.

New York has been racking up the wins since the beginning of the year, and they are an impressive 15-8 at Citi Field. The Mets are now 31-17 on the year with the two straight wins, and they have a big lead in the NL East.

The Philadelphia Phillies are moneyline betting favorites at -103 on Sunday Night Baseball.

Wheeler Must Deal For Phillies

The Phillies have given up eight runs in each of the first two games of this series, and that recipe simply won’t work to try and end this skid. Zack Wheeler will be on the mound, and the Phillies could use a big start from the veteran.

Wheeler is a former Met, and he has gone 3-3 with a 3.38 ERA this season. Not only would it be helpful for Wheeler to step up and deliver, but this offense also needs to find a way to strike early.

Bryce Harper leads the team with ten home runs, 32 RBIs, and a .317 batting average, and that’s even after missing some time. The rest of the Phillies lineup has been too inconsistent, and that simply must change.

Mets Have Plenty of Offense

The offensive numbers for the Mets have been terrific this season, and this team was not expected to be so great at the plate. New York is hitting .263 on the year, and they have an on-base percentage of .334.

Pete Alonso is having a big year for the Mets as he leads the team with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs. Jeff McNeil is another MVP candidate in the middle of the lineup as he is hitting right around .320.

Chris Bassitt gets to make the start for the Mets on Sunday, and he’s another player that has exceeded expectations. Bassitt is 4-2 with a 3.91 ERA, and finding a way to slow down Harper is going to be the key.

Mets Complete the Series Sweep

The starting pitching matchup might favor the Phillies just slightly, but the Mets are clearly the better overall team. New York just continues to come up with a big hit when needed, and the offense has had a big weekend.

The Phillies are in danger of falling too far out of the division race, and this weekend hasn’t helped out. Don’t expect Wheeler to shut down the Mets, and the Phillies just haven’t been swinging the bats well enough.

It’s been a rough weekend for the Phillies in New York, and things aren’t going to get any better on Sunday. Bet the New York Mets -2.5 on Sunday night as it is another blowout victory for them over their division rivals.

Prop Picks

NY Mets (-120) OVER 3.5 Runs

New York is averaging 5.02 runs per 9 innings on offense, which ranks No. 3 in the league, while hitting .263 as a team, which ranks No. 2. Scores have gone OVER in five of the Mets’ last seven home games when the Vegas total is set between 7.0 and 8.5.

With Dunkel predicting a New York victory by the score of 7-5, take the Mets (-120) to finish OVER their Vegas team total of 3.5 runs against the Phillies.

Chris Bassitt (+125) OVER 5.5 Strikeouts

Bassitt has 53 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched (9.0 Ks per 9 innings), which ranks No. 2 on the Mets. The Phillies’ offense is averaging 9.12 strikeouts per 9 innings, which ranks No. 24 in the league.

With Dunkel predicting a Mets win, take Bassitt (+120) to finish OVER 5.5 strikeouts versus Philadelphia.
