Oklahoma Sooners at Texas Longhorns Betting Preview
09 October 2021
The Red River Showdown is set to take place on Saturday featuring two of the most legendary college football programs in the country. The 6th ranked Oklahoma Sooners will face the 21st ranked Texas Longhorns in what should be a great matchup.
Oklahoma comes into this game with a perfect 5-0 record, and they currently control their own destiny in the Big 12 Conference. The Sooners have won four of their first five games by just seven points or less, but they have been clutch.
Texas suffered a blowout loss to Arkansas earlier this season, but they have won three straight games since that time. The Longhorns are still 4-1 on the year and are looking for a resume-boosting win in this game.
The Oklahoma Sooners are 3.5-point favorites over the Texas Longhorns in this showdown.
Oklahoma Can Defend
It is the Oklahoma offense that typically garners much of the attention, but the defense of the Sooners has been playing great this season. Oklahoma is allowing less than 20 points per game, and that has taken some pressure off of the offense.
Oklahoma is scoring over 38 points per game, but that number is boosted by a 76 point performance earlier this season. The Sooners want to play fast on offense, but they haven’t been explosive as in years past.
Quarterback Spencer Rattler has thrown for 1,260 yards and ten touchdowns this season, but he has also thrown four interceptions. Oklahoma is going to need to take care of the ball if they want to win this game.
Robinson Running For Longhorns
The Texas Longhorns have a Heisman Trophy candidate on their roster in running back Bijan Robinson. Robinson has already rushed for 652 yards and seven touchdowns this season, and he is going to see plenty of touches in this matchup.
Texas only throws for 204 yards per game, and they are going to have to put up more yardage than that if they want to win this game. Quarterback Casey Thompson has thrown for just 707 yards this season, and he is going to need to play his best game of the year. The Longhorns have also been solid on the defensive side of the ball, allowing just 24 points per game. Finding a way to get pressure on Rattler will be a huge key in this matchup.
Texas Topples Big 12 Rival
This rivalry has a history of delivering some classic games, and another should be on tap for Saturday. Even though there is some separation between the teams in the current rankings, don’t expect to see much separation on the field.
The rushing attack for Texas is going to be hard for Oklahoma to deal with, and that will also keep the Sooners offense on the sideline. Texas is looking to get some revenge in this rivalry, and that added motivation will play a role as well.
This game will be decided in the final minutes, and it will be Texas that gets the decisive score. Bet the Texas Longhorns over the Oklahoma Sooners in this huge rivalry game.
