The 2023 free agency period is going to be opening in a couple of weeks, and teams are working hard to reshape their rosters. This is always the time of year when franchises make big decisions on certain players, and it’s been a busy last few days. 

Several teams are going to look much different moving forward, and some big names are going to be changing teams. Here is a look at four recent news stories that will have an impact on the 2023 NFL season. 

Commanders Release Wentz

The Washington Commanders are making a big decision at the quarterback position, but it’s a move that many saw coming. Washington has decided to release quarterback Carson Wentz after just one season with the team.

Money is a big reason for letting Wentz go, but the veteran quarterback was largely unproductive in his first season in Washington. The Commanders are going to be saving more than $26 million, and it allows Wentz to sign with any team that he wants once free agency opens up. 

The Carolina Panthers could be an attractive destination for Wentz as he would get to reunite with former coach Frank Reich. 

Fournette Requests Release From Bucs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a team that is going to look very different next season, and it’s hard to think things are going to go well. Quarterback Tom Brady has already announced his retirement, and now a veteran running back is leading the team as well. 

Leonard Fournette is set to be released by the team, and it is going to come at the request of the running back. Fournette said that the retirement decision by Brady impacted his decision as he wants to join a team with a chance to win a Super Bowl. 

Bengals Keeping Higgins

The Cincinnati Bengals have some roster decisions to make in terms of the salary cap, and some teams believed that they were going to be making some big moves. Wide receiver Tee Higgins has been rumored to be on the move, but that doesn’t sound like he is going anywhere. 

Higgins will be entering the final season of his rookie deal, and the Bengals will have to sign him to an extension or run the risk of losing him after next year. Cincinnati has similar decisions to make with other young players, including quarterback Joe Burrow. 

Packers Weighing Options

The Green Bay Packers have the full attention of the rest of the league, as teams are waiting to see what direction they go at the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers has won two of the last three MVP Awards, but the team could be wanting to make a change and go with Jordan Love. 

Rodgers also has a big decision to make, and he doesn’t sound like a man that is ready to provide answers soon. Green Bay has to decide if they want to ink Jordan Love to a contract extension or they will run the risk of letting him go. 

The Packers could choose to trade Rodgers, and there would be a ton of teams that would be interested.
