NFL News: Wednesday, February 8th, 2023

It’s Super Bowl week in the NFL, but there haven’t really been any major news stories that have come out surrounding the big game. That’s actually a good thing for both teams, as it means that the Eagles and Chiefs are just going about their business in getting prepared. 

The rest of the league is not taking a break, though, as the other 30 teams are trying to find a way to get to the Super Bowl next season. There are plenty of coaching moves going on, and the quarterback market could be heating up over the next few days as well. 

Here are some of the biggest news stories that have come out lately surrounding the NFL. 

Rodgers Deciding Fate in Darkness

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is no stranger to doing unique activities during the offseason, but his most recent plan might be the craziest idea yet. Rodgers is planning to spend four days in complete darkness, and the only interaction he will have with anyone is the person that is delivering him food. 

Rodgers has had friends that have done this in the past as a way to block out the outside noise and reflect. The former MVP is planning to spend those four days deciding on his future in the NFL, and the entire league will keep a close eye on his decision. 

One choice would be to return to the Packers and work with the team on a restructured deal that would free up more cap space. Rodgers could also choose to retire, or try to force a trade to another team in the league.

Carr Meeting With Saints

Derek Carr’s time with the Las Vegas Raiders is apparently over as the team looks to move on to a younger quarterback option. The Raiders are trying to work with Carr to find him a new team, and they just granted him permission to meet with the New Orleans Saints. 

This is a chance for the Raiders to save some money, and it’s a chance for the Raiders to invest in a veteran quarterback that is proven. Carr is expected to meet with some other teams as well, but this first stop could signal if he is going to sign with the Saints. 

It’s important for teams to figure out the quarterback position prior to the NBA Draft, as there are plenty of great quarterback prospects available.

49ers Hire a Coach

The San Francisco 49ers continue to be a team that is a consistent threat to win the NFC, but they also have some things to figure out this offseason. The 49ers lost defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to the Houston Texans, and they wasted little time in filling that position. 

San Francisco announced the hiring of Steve Wilks as the new defensive coordinator, and he spent the end of the 2022 season as the interim coach with the Carolina Panthers. Wilks has a long career in the NFL, and he has spent time at many different positions. 

With this hiring, the 49ers are not expected to make many other changes on defense.
