Even though there are no NFL games taking place, it is still an extremely busy time throughout the league. Teams are making preparations for the upcoming NFL Draft, but teams also have to get their coaching staff in place. 

Here is a look at three of the most recent NFL news stories that could end up having an impact on the 2023 NFL season.

Colts Close to Naming New OC

The Indianapolis Colts are a team that is going to look much different next season as they needed to replace several members of the coaching staff. Shane Steichen is the new head coach in Indianapolis, and he has been working to add new assistant coaches and coordinators. 

According to league sources, the Colts are close to naming Jim Bob Cooter as the new offensive coordinator for the 2023 NFL season. Cooter last worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a passing game coordinator, and he does have some history working with Steichen. 

The Colts are going to be drafting a quarterback during the 2023 NFL Draft, and Cooter has plenty of experience and success in working with that position. Indianapolis was one of the worst offensive teams in the league a season ago, especially in terms of quarterback production. 

Gus Bradley served as the defensive coordinator last season with the Colts, and league sources believe that he is going to remain in that position.

Caldwell Done Seeking Coaching Jobs

There were a number of head coaching openings throughout the NFL this season, and there are always some candidates that seem to get mentioned for every opening. James Caldwell is typically one of those names, but the former head coach doesn’t plan on taking a new job.

Caldwell was fired by the Detroit Lions at the end of the 2017 season, and he hasn’t been back on the NFL sidelines since. He has interviewed more than a half dozen times since 2017 but has never been chosen to lead another NFL team. 

Caldwell has made it his mission to get more black head coaches in the NFL, but he isn’t going to be joining that list. The league has also taken big steps in attempting to get more African American coaches hired, but the percentage is still not as great as those leaders would like.

Purdy Has Surgery Delayed

The San Francisco 49ers are a team that has some issues at the quarterback position, and both of their current quarterbacks are on the injured list. San Francisco ended their season without any healthy quarterbacks, and they have a big decision to make in the 2023 NFL Draft. 

Brock Purdy put up monster numbers during his rookie season with the 49ers, but he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the NFC Championship Game. That injury is going to require surgery, but doctors are waiting for the swelling to go down before doing the surgery. 

Doctors have declared that it will take six months before Purdy is back on the football field, and that date is now pushed until late August. San Francisco is also hoping that Trey Lance makes a full recovery from a leg injury, but they could also look in a different direction.
