NFL News: Monday, March 6th, 2023

The 2023 NFL Draft Combine was held this past weekend, and that’s always a big few days for draft prospects and NFL teams. This is a league that never seems to take any days off, and things are really starting to heat up in anticipation of free agency. 

The biggest news stories surrounding the NFL tend to happen during the year, but there have been plenty of things happening over the last few days. Here is a look at three of the biggest NFL news stories that could have an impact on the upcoming season.

Raiders Looking to Tag Jacobs

The Las Vegas Raiders had a decision to make on running back Josh Jacobs, and it appears that they have determined what they want to do. According to league sources, the Raiders are going to place the franchise tag on Jacobs, and that will give them more time to try and negotiate a new deal. 

Las Vegas will have to make this move official by Tuesday, and it will end up costing them $10.09 million. That price tag is set by the league, but the Raiders are hoping to sign Jacobs to a contract extension by the mid-July deadline. 

The Raiders declined to pick up the fifth-year option for Jacobs prior to the 2022 season, but that proved to be a mistake. Jacobs had a career year in 2022 and solidified himself as one of the best running backs in the NFL. 

Jacobs led the NFL with 2,053 all-purpose yards during the regular season, and he was one of the best in the league in terms of yards after contact.

Patriots Cutting Hoyer

The New England Patriots ended the 2022 season with three quarterbacks on their roster, but they are going to be getting rid of one soon. New England has informed Brian Hoyer that he will be cut prior to March 15th, as that is the day that free agency will begin. 

The Patriots are going to have Mac Jones back as starting quarterback in 2023, and Bailey Zappe will be back as well. New England does intend to add another veteran quarterback, but they no longer want to pay Hoyer to remain on the roster. 

Hoyer made just one start during the 2022 season, and he wasn’t even able to finish the game. He suffered a concussion in his one start and spent the remainder of the season on injured reserve. 

Hoyer will be able to negotiate a new contract with another team in the league, and he is expected to draw interest from a number of franchises.

Richardson Wows At Combine

There were plenty of draft prospects that put up big numbers at the combine, but none were more impressive than Anthony Richardson. The Florida Gators quarterback set some new combine records for quarterbacks and impressed teams with his physical size and strength. 

Richardson set a record for quarterbacks in the broad jump and vertical jump and also ran a 4.43 time in the 40-yard dash. That is the fourth fastest time ever recorded for a quarterback prospect, and many of the names on the list ahead of him were much smaller.
