NFL News: Monday, March 20th, 2023

20 March 2023 By Ryan Knuppel

NFL free agency continues to heat up, and there are players signing deals all over the league. The Jets and Packers continue to move forward with a trade for Aaron Rodgers, but that’s not the only transaction taking place.

It can be hard to keep up with all of the moves that are taking place throughout the league, but some moves are bigger than others. Here is a look at three of the biggest moves throughout the NFL over the last few days.

Raiders Introduce New Quarterback

The Las Vegas Raiders have a new quarterback heading into next season, and the team finally introduced him to the media and fans. Jimmy Garoppolo is the new quarterback for the Raiders, and it reunited him with head coach Josh McDaniels.

Having McDaniels as head coach in Las Vegas was a big reason for Garoppolo to choose the Raiders, as the two worked together in New England. Garoppolo is leaving the San Francisco 49ers as the team is heading in a new direction at the quarterback position.

The Raiders are paying Garoppolo $67.5 million on a three-year deal, and at least $34 million of that money is guaranteed. Las Vegas decided to let Derek Carr walk in free agency, and he had been their starting quarterback since 2014.

Garoppolo is one of the most successful regular-season quarterbacks in league history, as his record stands at 40-17. Staying healthy has been a big issue for the veteran quarterback, but the Raiders are banking on the fact that he can stay healthy.

Tunsil Gets Paid By Texans

The Houston Texans have signed offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil to a three-year contract extension worth $75 million. That money is significant as it makes Tunsil the highest-paid offensive lineman in league history.

Trent Williams used to hold the record for the highest contract for an offensive lineman, making just over $23 million per game. Tunsil announced during the regular season that he would be seeking a deal to make him the highest paid in league history.

Houston is in a position to take a quarterback with the number two pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and they want Tunsil to anchor that line.

Cowboys Get a Receiver

The Dallas Cowboys have expressed some interest in wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but the team is going to move in a different direction. Dallas has announced that they have reached a trade with the Houston Texans for wide receiver Brandin Cooks, and that will give Dak Prescott a new weapon.

Dallas is sending a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft in exchange for Cooks, but adding speed on the perimeter was a big goal for the Cowboys. The Cowboys already have CeeDee Lamb as their top wide receiver option, but getting Cooks on board should lead to more offense.

This was not the first time that the Cowboys have attempted to land Cooks in a deal, as they talked to the Texans prior to the trade deadline in 2022.
