NFL News: Monday, April 3rd, 2023

It’s been a slow week around the NFL, as most teams are busy trying to plan and prepare for the 2023 NFL Draft. There have been a couple of signings or moves made over the past few days, and there will be more in the future as well. 

Even though there hasn’t been a ton of moves over the last few days, this is still a league that continues to attract plenty of attention. Here is a look at three of the biggest news stories over the last few days.

Slay Staying With Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles had a number of key decisions to make this offseason, and they were in jeopardy of losing several key pieces. Philadelphia is getting one of their top defensive players back, but that almost didn’t happen. 

Darius Slay decided to re-sign with the Eagles this off-season, but he was almost a member of the Baltimore Ravens. Slay explained his thought process and his decision on his podcast earlier this week. 

The Eagles decided to bring Slay back on a three-year, $42 million deal that will keep the pro bowl cornerback in Philadelphia. Slay was given permission to seek a trade with a new NFL team, and the Eagles were looking to cut their star cornerback at one point. 

Baltimore was hoping to bring in Slay in an effort to improve their defense, and they are also in need of a cornerback. Marcus Peters is a free agent with the Ravens, and that would be a massive loss for a team that needs defense. 

Slay has been named to the Pro Bowl team five different times during his career and had one of his best seasons in the NFL in 2022. 

Seahawks Pull Offer From Neal

The Seattle Seahawks have made a roster decision in hopes of creating more financial flexibility. Seattle had previously tendered a contract to safety Ryan Neal, and it will save the team $2.6 million. 

The Seahawks were originally hoping to bring Neal back for next season, and they offered him a contract that would have restricted his movement around the league. By pulling back the offer, Neal is now able to sign with any other team without the threat of potentially returning to Seattle. 

Seattle also decided to rescind this offer to Neal after reaching an agreement with free agent Julian Love. The Seahawks now have a trio of terrific players in the secondary, and that should allow them to have a dominant defense. 

Brockington Dies at 74

The Green Bay Packers announced that fullback John Brockington has passed away at the age of 74. Brockington is fourth on the all-time rushing list in Green Bay, as he was a member of the team from 1971 through 1977. 

Not only was Brockington a Packers legend, but he also did some things that had never been done in league history. He became the first running back in NFL history to record at least 1,000 rushing yards in three straight seasons. 

The Packers inducted Brockington into their Hall of Fame in 1984, and they were given the opportunity to break the announcement to football fans.
