NFL News: January 20, 2023

20 January 2023 By Cole Paganelli

The NFL Playoffs are the biggest focus when it comes to professional sports in the United States, but there are other NFL news stories as well. The NFL offseason is always full of coaching changes, and that is the case already.

Four teams that were just eliminated from the playoffs have already made a move at a coaching position. Here is a look at those four teams and four coaches that are now looking for a new job.

Leftwich Let Go By Bucs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making a change at the offensive coordinator position after an abysmal season on offense. Byron Leftwich has been fired by the team, and a total of nine coaches have been let go.

Leftwich just completed his fourth season as offensive coordinator with the Buccaneers, but this was by far the worst the offense had looked. Tampa Bay was just 25th in the NFL in total offense this season, and they could not find any way to move the ball on the ground.

Tampa Bay has some big decisions to make this offseason, as Tom Brady is now an unrestricted free agent.

Roman Leaving Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are also looking for a new offensive coordinator, but they didn’t fire anyone in order to create this vacancy. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman decided to resign at the end of the season after failing to lead the offense.

Roman still had one year remaining on his deal with the Ravens, but fans had been calling for his resignation or for the team to fire him. Baltimore saw its scoring average drop in each of the four seasons that Roman was in charge of the offense.

The Ravens will likely be looking outside of the organization for a new offensive coordinator, and Roman is a name that should generate some interest with other franchises.

Dolphins Change DC

When the Miami Dolphins fired Brian Flores to bring in Mike McDaniel, there were some coaches that remained with the team. Defensive coordinator Josh Boyer was one of those coaches, but his time with the franchise has finally ended.

Boyer was one of four defensive coaches fired by McDaniel and the Dolphins after their season ended in the Wild Card Round. Miami had just 14 total takeaways during the 2022 season, and they struggled to keep teams out of the end zone.

With sweeping changes made to the defensive coaching staff, the Dolphins are going to have to commit some time and resources to improving that defense.

Vikings Making Moves

The Minnesota Vikings didn’t need any help scoring points during the 2022 season, but the defensive side of the ball was a different story. Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell made the very unsurprising decision to fire Ed Donatell after a loss to the New York Giants in the Wild Card Round.

O’Connell actually vowed to make changes during the regular season, and it was widely assumed that this move was coming. Donatell is a proven and effective defensive coordinator in the NFL, but his schemes just never seemed to work in Minnesota.
