NFL News For March 13th, 2023

13 March 2023 By Cole Paganelli

With the NFL free agency period officially set to begin later this week, it will be nearly impossible to keep up with all the big NFL news. There is always a ton of movement throughout the NFL when it comes to free agency, and that should be the case yet again.

Some teams are looking to shed some payroll before starting free agency, while others want to keep their top players. Here is a look at three of the biggest NFL news stories from around the league over the last few days.

Rams Dealing Ramsey to Dolphins

The Los Angeles Rams had a very disappointing 2022 season, and it was clear that changes needed to be made. Los Angeles will be looking to revamp the roster this offseason, and they made an interesting roster decision over the weekend.

The Rams agreed to trade Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a third-round pick and tight end, Hunter Long. This trade won’t be completed until Wednesday, but getting an All-Pro cornerback is a big addition for the Miami Dolphins.

Ramsey went to Twitter on Sunday night to share his excitement about the deal, and he will turn the Dolphins' defense into a great weapon. Three years remain on his current contract, and the Dolphins have agreed to guarantee those years.

Miami has already informed current cornerback Byron Jones that he would be released on Wednesday, and bringing Ramsey in will cover that loss. The Dolphins brought Bradley Chubb in on a trade during the 2022 season as they are trying to create a defense that can match the offense.

Commanders Keeping Payne

The Washington Commanders had a number of roster decisions to make this offseason, and they just recently announced that they had made a big move. Washington was able to reach a new contract extension with defensive tackle Daron Payne after they initially placed the franchise tag on him.

The new extension is a four-year deal that is worth $90 million, with $60 million of that guaranteed. Payne now has the second-largest contract in NFL history for a defensive tackle, behind Aaron Donald.

Washington wanted to work quickly in order to get an extension done with Payne, as that would help guide them when making roster decisions. Payne was able to cash in after having a career-high 11.5 sacks during the 2022 season.

Jets Lock In Top Defender

The New York Jets are still trying to convince Aaron Rodgers to join them by requesting a trade, but that hasn’t stopped them from making other moves. New York announced that they were able to reach a new three-year contract extension with linebacker Quincy Williams.

The contract is for three years and will pay Williams $18 million, but incentives could bump up the contract's total value to $21 million. New York is another team with a number of key decisions to make, but bringing Williams back was always a priority for this team.
