New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays Betting Preview/Prop Picks

20 June 2022

Today, the New York Yankees will have to deal with traveling from Toronto to Tampa Bay. After just finishing their series against the Blue Jays, they’ll head out to Tampa to face the Rays.

This is a tough travel time, especially with only hours of rest in between games. Energy could be low for the Yankees tonight, which is something to keep in mind. Still, they’ll give it all they’ve got.

The Tampa Bay Rays are in a good position here, even after a loss to the Orioles. Sure, they were defeated 2-1 and lost the series, but now it’s time for payback. The last time they faced the Yankees, the Rays lost all three games.

Not to mention, it wasn’t very long ago. How the Rays batters deal with the Yankees pitching is our big question. We’ll attempt to answer that today.

New York Yankees: Travel time could have an adverse effect

Most fail to realize how a quick turnaround can affect a team. Coming off a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Yankees had to head from Toronto to Tampa Bay.

This is a long flight and likely had many tired Yankees on it. The good news is the Yankees are familiar with travel, which will help them here. It also helps that they’re starting one of the best pitchers in the entire MLB.

Gerrit Cole will get the start for the Yankees tonight and has a record of 6-1. With an ERA of 3.33, the Yankees are in good shape to win this game. Along with Cole, the Yankees have a strong batting lineup that hits .249.

Their loss yesterday was a tough one, but we expect to see them bounce back here. This is especially true if Cole gets off to a good start against Tampa.

Tampa Bay Rays: Tampa will start their own ace in tonight’s game

The Rays are coming off a series loss to both the Orioles and the Yankees. Tonight, in hopes that they’ll have a better outing, they’ll start Shane McClanahan. McClanahan is 7-3 as a starter with an ERA of 1.84.

Not only does he have more wins than Cole, but a better ERA as well. This is definitely going to be the matchup of the night. Still, we think the Yankees have a slight edge.

The biggest problem for the Rays is how they perform at the plate. To be fair, they’re pretty average, hitting .233 this season. However, the Yankees are at .249, which is well ahead of the Rays.

This was also one of the main reasons the Rays lost so many games to New York. When betting, you’ll have to take these variables into consideration. So, who should you choose?

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays Betting Pick

When looking at the Tampa Bay Rays, a few things stand out. For starters, they have some good pitching on the mound tonight.

However, their performances at the plate are always a concern. Even with McClanahan on the mound, the Rays will have trouble taking this one.

Because of this, we’re actually going to take the New York Yankees at -132. The Yankees have great pitching along with a really strong bullpen. How they play at the plate also weighs into it, so we’ll take them here.

We’ll also tag on the under since eight of their last 12 have gone under when playing Tampa on the road.

Prop Picks

Tampa Bay (+100) UNDER 2.5 Runs

New York is allowing 2.98 runs per 9 innings on defense, which ranks No. 1 in the league, while holding opponents to a .212 batting average and .610 OPS, which also rank No. 1. Scores have gone UNDER in five of the Yankees’ last seven road games against the Rays.

With Dunkel predicting a New York victory by the score of 3-1, take the Rays (+100) to finish UNDER their Vegas team total of 2.5 runs against the Yankees.

Gerrit Cole (+115) To Record A Win

Cole has 6 wins in 13 starts this season, which ranks No. 2 among Yankee starters. The veteran righthander is a perfect 3-0 in 6 starts on the road.

With Dunkel predicting a Yankees road victory while holding the Rays UNDER their Vegas team run total, take Cole (+115) to record the win against Tampa Bay.
