New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox Betting Preview/Prop Picks
07 July 2022

A rivalry that has gone on for ages is set to have another installment today. The New York Yankees will face the Boston Red Sox tonight. New York is on the road after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh, 16-0.
A win like that should have morale high, but they can’t underestimate the Red Sox. Even with their 59-23 record, the Yankees have lost to them before.
The Boston Red Sox are 45-37 this season and rank second in the AL East. Although they’re well behind the Yankees, a win would feel pretty good for them. They lost their last two games against the Tampa Bay Rays but still have one of the best batting teams.
If they can put great batting with strong pitching, they could win this one. Let’s look at each team and make our pick.
New York Yankees: Yankees will send out Cole to face Boston
It’s a good idea for the Yankees to put Gerrit Cole on the mound against Boston. Cole has a record of 7-3 this season with an ERA of 2.99. Putting Cole up against Boston gives the Yankees a good chance to win this one.
He’s got a great arm and has thrown 117 strikeouts in just 93.1 innings. In that same time, he’s only allowed 68 hits and 14 home runs this season.
The other area the Yankees can excel at is bringing runs in. They scored 16 runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates and rank first in the league with 421 runs. The team batting average isn’t great, currently ranked 15th overall.
However, they still have a .242 batting average and an on-base percentage of .325. At this point, they seem to be the much better option tonight.
Boston Red Sox: Pitching could be a problem tonight
For Boston, an area they could struggle with today is on the mound. They’ll be starting Josh Winckowski, who is 3-2 as a starter. His record is over .500, which isn’t a problem, but he’s only pitched 26 innings.
This means we don’t have a large sample size of what he can do. Through those innings, he’s allowed 29 hits. Against the Yankees, hits turn into runs fairly quickly.
The good news for the Red Sox is they have a strong group of batters. As a team, the Red Sox rank first in MLB in terms of batting average (.261). They have the sixth-best on-base percentage at .324 and a .414 slugging percentage.
Their efforts at the plate could keep them in the contest tonight. However, we don’t see the Red Sox being able to pull this one off at home.
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox Betting Pick
As we look at the New York Yankees, we see a total package of pitching and batting. With Cole on the mound, the Yankees should be able to slow down the Red Sox.
However, the Red Sox will have a tough time stopping the Yankees batters with Winckowsk. It’s also important to note that the Yankees are 25-14 when playing on the road this season.
Along with taking the Yankees at -164, we’re going to pair them with the under tonight. Our reason for this is that in six of the Yankees’ last eight games, the total has gone under. For Boston, four of their last five games have gone under.
