Big Ten Conference football action doesn’t wait around until Saturday to get started in Week 6, as there is an interesting game on Friday night. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights host the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a game where both teams need a win.
Nebraska comes into this game with a record of 2-3 on the year, but they improved to 1-1 in conference action after beating Indiana in Week 5. The Cornhuskers fired head coach Scott Frost earlier this year, but this is still a talented team.
Rutgers started off the season with three straight wins, but they have lost their first two conference matchups. The Scarlet Knights were blown out a weekend ago in Columbus against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are slim 2.5-point betting favorites on Friday night against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Nebraska Can Score
The offensive numbers for Nebraska have been impressive this season, as they are a team that is scoring over 31 points per game. Nebraska has been able to throw the ball well this season, but they can also rack up some rushing yards.
Running back Anthony Grant has been a star through five games, as he has 600 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. Nebraska will be looking to push the tempo in this game in an effort to wear down the Scarlet Knights.
The Nebraska defense has started to improve of late, but they are still allowing over 32 points per game. It’s going to take a solid effort on both ends of the field to pick up a road win at Rutgers on Friday.
Rutgers Has to Defend
Rutgers comes into this game allowing 23 points per game, but that number has risen significantly since Big Ten Conference play has started. The Scarlet Knights have been able to stop the run, but that secondary is starting to show some holes.
The offense for Rutgers is scoring right around 25 points per game, but they aren’t a team that is going to make a bunch of explosive plays. Rutgers is averaging 170 rushing yards per game, and they will be trying to slow it down and have long drives.
Quarterback Evan Simon is going to be a huge key in this one, as he has thrown for just 640 yards and four touchdowns this season.
Cornhuskers Cruise to a Win
It was a very rocky start to the season for this Nebraska team, but it’s hard to deny that they are one of the most talented teams in the Big Ten. That offense should have a big day on Friday night, and that will allow them to get separation in this game.
Rutgers just hasn’t proven that it can keep up with teams from the Big Ten, and playing at home won’t even help in this one. The Scarlet Knights just don’t have the defense to get stops, and they can’t keep pace on offense.
Bet the Nebraska Cornhuskers -2.5 as they go into Rutgers and beat the Scarlet Knights by at least two touchdowns on Friday night.
Prop Picks
Nebraska (-125) OVER 25.5 Points
Nebraska is averaging 29.8 points per game on offense this season, which ranks No. 54 in the FBS. That average remains relatively consistent at 28.0 points per game on the road. Scores have gone OVER in 13 of the Cornhuskers’ last 19 Friday games.
With Dunkel predicting a Nebraska win by the score of 39-23, take the Cornhuskers (-125) to finish OVER their Vegas point total of 25.5 points against the Scarlet Knights.
