NBA News: Tuesday, February 7th, 2023

It’s been a busy couple of days throughout the NBA, and there were a couple of stories that will impact how the upcoming 2023 NBA Playoffs play out. There was a major trade involving one of the best players in the league, and another former MVP is set to miss some time with an injury. 

With the Trade Deadline and All-Star Break both coming quickly, teams are being forced to make a decision about how to move forward. Here are three of the biggest news stories from around the league over the last few days.

Curry Set to Be Sidelined For Weeks

The Golden State Warriors have been dealing with adversity all season long, and they were dealt another significant blow over the weekend. All-Star point guard Stephen Curry was injured in a win over the Dallas Mavericks, and it’s an injury that will keep him sidelined for a while. 

An MRI revealed that there is some ligament damage in Curry’s left leg, and he also has a left leg contusion. It’s unclear how long Curry will be out, but the team has announced that he will be out through the All-Star break. 

Golden State ended the weekend in seventh place in the Western Conference playoffs, but they were also only a couple of games out of third place. The Warriors have struggled without Curry in the past, and they could be a team looking to make a splash at the Trade Deadline. 

NBA Approves Sale of Suns

The Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury officially have a new owner after the Board of Governors approved the purchase earlier this week. Mat Ishbia was unanimously approved for the purchase, but the Cleveland Cavaliers abstained from the final vote.

This has been an ongoing process dating back to 2022, but the final step will allow Ishbia to take full ownership of the team. Ishbia will have a 57% controlling stake of the franchise, and the total price of the purchase cost over $2.2 billion. 

Robert Sarver was being forced to sold the team after a long investigation looked into the culture that was in place with the Suns. 

Irving Traded to Mavericks

Late last week, it was announced that Kyrie Irving had requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets and was planning on sitting out until one was granted. It didn’t take long for many teams throughout the league to call about a potential trade, and the Nets were able to weigh their options. 

Ultimately Brooklyn decided to send the All-Star point guard to the Dallas Mavericks, where he will team up with Luka Doncic. Irving’s preferred destination was Los Angeles, but the Mavericks were not willing to give him a trade to his top choice. 

The Nets now have a decision to make with Kevin Durant, but the team is hoping to keep him on the roster and look to improve. This first major domino should ignite many other moves during the Trade Deadline period. 

Doncic is currently dealing with an injury for the Mavericks, but the title odds greatly improved when the trade was announced.
