NBA News: Monday, February 27th, 2023

We are a week removed from the 2023 NBA All-Star Break, and teams took the floor again over the past few days. The focus on the NBA is really going to be heating up over the next few weeks as the playoff standings are going to get tighter as well. 

There have been some other things taking place around the league as well, and it was another exciting weekend. Here is a look at three NBA news stories that are drawing plenty of attention.

Bucks Being Dealt

Marc Lasry is the current co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, but he isn’t going to be holding that title for much longer. Lasry has agreed to sell his ownership of the team to Jimmy and Dee Haslam, and those brothers own the Cleveland Browns. 

The NBA still has to approve this deal, just like all others, and the price tag for this sale is $3.5 billion. That would be the second-highest purchase of an NBA team in history after the $4 billion price that was paid by Mat Ishbia for the Phoenix Suns. 

Lasry bought the Bucks back in 2014 from Herb Kohl, and he was able to transform the franchise into an NBA champion. It was under the ownership of Lasry that the Fiserv Forum was built as a new downtown location for the team to play in. 

The Haslam Brothers not only own the Cleveland Browns of the NFL, but they are also owners of the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.

Hawks in Agreement With Snyder

The Atlanta Hawks have found their new head coach just days after firing Nate McMillan. Quin Snyder has agreed to be the new head coach in Atlanta, and the two sides have agreed upon a five-year deal. 

Atlanta is hoping to have their new head coach on the sidelines on Tuesday night when they host the Washington Wizards. Snyder stepped down as head coach of the Utah Jazz after last season, but he had plenty of success with that franchise.

Point guard Trae Young is excited to work with Snyder, and that was part of the reason that the decision was made to bring him in now. The Hawks are currently in 8th place in the Eastern Conference.

Lillard Pours in 71 Points

Damian Lillard has always been known as one of the best scorers in the NBA, but he had the best game of his career on Sunday night. Lillard poured in 71 points on 13 made three-point field goals in the win over the Houston Rockets, and both marks set a career-high and new franchise record. 

There have been seven other players in NBA history to score at least 70 points in a game, but Lillard is the oldest of that group. His 71 points tied the mark set by Donovan Mitchell for the most points this season. 

Lillard held the previous record with the Portland Trail Blazers for points scored in a game with 61, and he actually did that a pair of times. This was the fifth 60-point performance for Lillard, and only Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant have had more.
