MLB Rankings

21 June 2021

It’s time to start another new week in Major League Baseball, and taking a look at the updated rankings is a great place to start. There hasn’t been a ton of movement at the top, and the best teams are starting to separate from the pack.

With the 2021 Trade Deadline just a few weeks away, teams will have to decide if they plan on becoming buyers or sellers this season. Things can change quickly in baseball, but it appears that there are only a handful of teams that can win it all.

Giants On Top

The San Francisco Giants enter this week as the top-ranked team in baseball, and they have improved their record to 46-26. San Francisco was not supposed to be a real threat to win the NL West Division this season, but they just continue to get great pitching.

Even though the Giants keep winning, they can’t seem to shake the Los Angeles Dodgers, the number two team in the rankings this week. Los Angeles has improved its record to 44-27 after completing a weekend sweep over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The San Diego Padres are also a threat to win the NL West Division title this season, but they have fallen to 8th in the latest rankings. San Diego is 42-32 on the season, and they will need to go on a run if they want to get back in the division race.

The third and fourth place spots in the weekly rankings are held by two teams competing in the American League West. The Houston Astros (43-28) are just slightly ahead of the Oakland Athletics (44-29), but those teams could jockey back and forth over the next few months.

Winning the American League is going to be a major challenge this season as that league is loaded with great teams. The 5th-7th spots on the rankings are taken by teams from the American League, and all of them could win the World Series.

The Boston Red Sox are now 43-29 on the season, and they are ranked 5th this week. Boston continues to win games with their offense, but the pitching has started to deliver as well.

The Chicago White Sox are in sixth place this week after struggling this weekend against the Houston Astros. Chicago is still on top of the AL Central, but injuries are starting to take a toll.

Tampa Bay checks in at 7th this week, and the Rays just continue to win games.

Diamondbacks In Complete Free Fall

When looking at the other end of the rankings, the Arizona Diamondbacks have taken complete control of the last spot. It’s hard to put into words how bad Arizona has been in the month of June, but this team has now lost 17 straight games.

When the pitching finally shows up for Arizona, then the offense takes a night off. If the Diamondbacks finally score some runs, then the pitching staff decides to struggle.

The Baltimore Orioles enter the week with a record of 23-48, and they are just slightly ahead of Arizona in the rankings. The Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates hold down the 28th and 27th spots on this list, respectively.
