Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets Betting Preview/Player Prop

Sunday Night Baseball features a pair of MLB Playoff hopefuls squaring off as the New York Mets are set to host the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles has won the first two games of this series, but both of those games have been decided in extra innings. 

The Dodgers have improved their record to 71-46 on the season, and they are also nine games above the .500 mark on the road. Los Angeles is still trying to track down the San Francisco Giants in the NL West, but the Wild Card might be their best path to the playoff. 

New York has led the NL East Division for much of the season, but that is no longer the case. The Mets have really struggled since the beginning of July, and they are now 59-57, which is good enough for third place in the division. 

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the betting favorites at -182 over the New York Mets on Sunday Night Baseball.

Los Angeles Leaning on Pitching

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been one of the best pitching staffs in baseball this season, and one of their stars are on the mound Sunday night. This team has some major weapons in the starting rotation, and Max Scherzer starts in the series finale. 

Scherzer has pitched well since joining the Dodgers, and he has gone 9-4 with a 2.67 ERA overall. The Dodgers also have a loaded bullpen, but Scherzer can take care of things on his own. 

Max Muncy leads the Dodgers with 23 home runs, while Justin Turner is hitting .288 with a team-leading 66 RBIs. This offense could still be more productive, but it is still one of the best in baseball. 

Mets Not Scoring Runs

The Mets have not been a great offensive team this season, and that has been the case in this series as well. New York is playing without Francisco Lindor and Javier Baez, taking too big bats from the lineup.

Pete Alonso leads the team with 25 home runs and 65 RBIs, and he has plenty of experience against Scherzer. The Mets will need to run into some fastballs if they want to win this game. 

Carlos Carrasco starts for New York on Sunday night, and he is looking for his first decision in 2021. Carrasco has pitched to a 6.45 ERA, and he will need to be great to give his team a chance. 

Dodgers Complete the Sweep

The Mets have been in a major slump over the last few weeks, and they just can't win a close game. New York is now set to face one of the best pitchers in baseball, and this offense is going to struggle to score.

The Mets should be able to keep this close with Carrasco on the mound, but they just won't have enough offense. Los Angeles comes into this game with some offensive momentum, and it will continue on to Sunday night.

Player Prop

Trea Turner (-320) Over 0.5 Hits

While the acquisition of Max Scherzer at the trade deadline was the big headline for the Dodgers, the addition of Turner from the Nats was just as significant. The 28-year-old shortstop was already having an All-Star season and gives LA some versatility in the infield with his ability to move over to second base to accommodate the return of shortstop Corey Seager from the IL.

And Turner has not disappointed since coming over, picking up hits in five of the seven games he’s started for the Dodgers while scoring six runs, including a highlight reel slide against the Phillies. Not surprisingly, LA is 6-1 in those seven games.

Turner is coming off an 0-for-4 performance last night against the Mets. But he hasn’t stayed hitless for long this season. The last time he went hitless in back-to-back games was June 12-13 versus the Giants. Since that time, he’s picked up at least one hit in eight straight games following a hitless effort.

We’ll stick with that trend tonight and take Turner (-320) to collect at least one hit against the Mets.
