The number one team in the NL West faces the second place team in the NL Central tonight. The Los Angeles Dodgers will continue their series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Last night's game resulted in a 5-4 loss for the Dodgers, which is rather surprising. Still, they come in as the favorites for this game which is no shock. The question is, can they actually cover those odds?
The Milwaukee Brewers have a record of 62-53 this season. At home, they've gone 30-23, including last night's win over the Dodgers. In order to grab another win over Los Angeles, they'll need some spectacular hitting.
With who the Dodgers have on the mound, this game could be a rough one for Milwaukee. Let's look at each team and make our pick for tonight.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Tony Gonsolin gets the start tonight
One of the most efficient pitchers in Major League Baseball is Tony Gonsolin. This season, he has a record of 14-1 with an ERA of 2.24. With him on the mound, the Dodgers have a great chance of winning this game.
However, it also depends on who they bring in after Gonsolin. Their bullpen has suffered some serious injuries, with over five pitchers on the injured list.
At the plate, the Dodgers are among the best in the league. Batting .260, the Dodgers rank third in the team batting average category. They have an on-base percentage of .336, ranking first, and have scored 618 runs.
Even though they ranked first in all of these categories, the Brewers won last night. The Dodgers need a fast start and for Gonsolin to pitch for at least six innings.
Milwaukee Brewers: It's all up to the Brewers batters tonight
This is an interesting game since the Brewers pulled off that 5-4 win. To be fair, it was Victor Caratini that won the game for the Brewers last night.
The two-run single that Caratini hit in the 11th inning was exactly what Milwaukee needed. That's the key to success for the Brewers, their batters. The only problem is they're facing one of the toughest pitchers in the league.
Getting the start for the Brewers tonight is Eric Lauer, who is 8-4 this season. Lauer has a 3.64 ERA and has thrown 116 strikeouts in 118.2 innings.
As a team, the Brewers have a batting average of .237, ranking 22nd in the league. Coming in as underdogs, the Brewers will need to find a way to stop the efficiency of the Dodgers batters. This task is much easier said than done.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Milwaukee Brewers
The Dodgers come into this game as heavy favorites, and for a good reason. Sure, they suffered a loss last night, but you can't argue the fact that they're the more talented team. They have better pitching, especially with Gonsolin on the mound, and better batting.
They have a 40-20 record on the road this season as well and are 5-1 in their last six against Milwaukee. Not only will we take the Dodgers -170, but we'll take the under as well. The total has gone under in 10 of the Dodgers' last 18 games following a loss.
DunkelIndex Free Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -170, UNDER
Prop Picks
Milwaukee (-135) UNDER 3.5 Runs
LA is allowing 3.20 runs per 9 innings on defense, which ranks No. 1 in the league. That average decreases to 3.02 runs per 9 innings on the road. Scores have gone UNDER in seven of the Dodgers’ last 10 road games versus the Brewers.
With Dunkel predicting an LA victory by the score of 4-2, take the Brewers (-135) to finish UNDER their Vegas team total of 3.5 runs against the Dodgers.
LA Dodgers (-170) Most Hits
Milwaukee is averaging 7.93 hits per 9 innings on offense, which ranks No. 21 in the league. That average decreases to 7.70 hits per 9 innings at home. LA is averaging 8.87 hits per 9 innings, which ranks No. 4 in the league. That average increases to 9.18 hits per 9 innings on the road.
With Dunkel predicting an LA road victory, take the Dodgers (-170) to finish with more hits than the Brewers.
Tony Gonsolin (-140) UNDER 2.5 Earned Runs
Gonsolin has allowed 29 earned runs in 116.1 innings pitched this season for an ERA of 2.24. The LA right hander has an ERA of 0.77 (1 earned run in 11.2 IP) in August.
With Dunkel predicting a Dodgers win while holding the Brewers UNDER their Vegas run total, take Gonsolin (-140) to finish UNDER 2.5 earned runs allowed against Milwaukee.
