Los Angeles Angels at Miami Marlins Betting Preview/Prop Picks

06 July 2022

The Los Angeles Angels have lost four games in a row this season, bringing their record to 37-45. At the moment, the Angels rank fourth in the AL West, which doesn't bode well for their future.

Yesterday, they suffered a 2-1 loss to the Miami Marlins, the team they face again tonight. With a few changes and one of their best pitchers, they're hoping for a win here.

The Marlins aren't a team that is very easy to beat, even with an under .500 record. Injuries seem to be the biggest problem for the Marlins, but they could see a few players return. They were able to win their last six games while dealing with injuries as well.

With a few wins, they could surpass Philadelphia in the NL East. First, they'll need to beat Ohtani and the Angels.

Los Angeles Angels: LA looks to Ohtani for help against Miami

With the losing streak totaling four games in a row, the Angels desperately need a win. They've fallen to fourth in the AL West and have a 16-22 record when traveling. Tonight, they'll send out Shohei Ohtani, one of their best pitchers.

Still, Ohtani only has a 7-4 record this season and can't do much about the Angels' poor batting. His ERA is rather impressive at 2.68 this season.

In terms of batting, the Angels rank 25th overall in batting average at .232. They have an on-base percentage of .301 which ranks 24th. In runs, the team ranks 25th in the MLB with a total of 332. When looking at where they struggle the most, it's at the plate.

This is in spite of Mike Trout leading the team with a .273 batting average. The group as a whole isn't good.

Miami Marlins: Batting will make the biggest difference in this one

We'll go over just how ahead the Marlins are in terms of batting below. First, we're going to take a look at the team's six-game winning streak.

The Marlins, over the last few series, have beaten the St. Louis Cardinals, the Washington Nationals, and the Angels. In their series against the Nationals, the Marlins swept them in a four-game series. Now, let's look at the team batting.

Over the course of their sweep against the Nationals, the Marlins averaged 5.25 runs per game. As a group, they rank 13th with a .245 batting average this season.

They have a better on-base percentage than the Angels as well at .311. On the mound tonight is Trevor Rogers, who is 5-6 as a starter. The only problem we see is Rogers' ERA of 5.56 over the span of 68 innings.

Los Angeles Angels at Miami Marlins Betting Pick

When looking at each of these teams, the batting groups stand out the most. The Angels have a slight advantage in terms of pitching with Ohtani on the mound.

However, their batting is so poor that it's tough to take them in this one. Couple that with the fact that they're well under .500 on the road, and it's clear who to choose.

We'll take the Miami Marlins +146 at home to win this game. The Marlins are 20-16 when playing at home and have a strong group of batters. We're also going to add the under to our pick as the total has gone under in five of their last seven games.

Prop Picks

LA Angels (-145) UNDER 4.5 Runs

LA is averaging 4.05 runs per 9 innings on offense, which ranks No. 24 in the league. That average drops to 3.68 runs per 9 innings on the road, which ranks No. 26. Scores have gone UNDER in 8 of the Angels’ last 11 road games.

With Dunkel predicting a Miami victory by the score of 3-2, take the Angels (-145) to finish UNDER their Vegas team total of 4.5 runs against the Marlins.

Trevor Rogers (-180) OVER 4.5 Strikeouts

Rogers has record 62 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched for an average of 8.2 Ks per 9 innings, which ranks No. 3 on the Marlins staff. The Miami left hander has 30 Ks in 24.2 innings pitched at home compared to 32 Ks in 43.1 innings pitched on the road.

With Dunkel predicting a Marlins home victory while holding the Angels UNDER their Vegas team run total, take Rogers (-180) to finish OVER 4.5 strikeouts against LA.
