Latest NFL News and Notes: August 18, 2021

A week into the NFL preseason, teams are signing contract extensions, making cuts, and gearing up for the league’s first 17-game regular season. Here’s the latest news and notes to know, as of August 18, 2021.

Seahawks Sign Adams to Record-Breaking Extension

On Tuesday morning, the Seattle Seahawks signed safety Jamal Adams to a four-year extension worth up to $72 million, $38 million of which is guaranteed. The extension will be tacked on to the end of his rookie deal, keeping Adams in the Seahawks’ fold through the 2025 season. 

The deal makes Adams the highest-paid safety in league history, with the average salary of $17.5 million shattering the previous record of $15.25 million for Justin Simmons of the Denver Broncos. 

Adams credited a text message from his mother as the tipping point in getting the deal done.

"She said my full name, and when my mother says my full name, I think I need to pay attention," Adams said. "She gave me a nice little paragraph and basically just told me that you don't have to prove anything else to anybody. You did enough. We're happy. As long as my family's happy and I'm happy, I can come and do what I love to do, that's all that matters to me."

Jaguars Release Tebow

One of the preseason’s biggest storylines has come to an end as Tim Tebow’s comeback bid came up short. The Jacksonville Jaguars released Tebow on Tuesday during the first round of roster cuts.

Tebow, a former quarterback who took time away from the NFL to pursue a baseball career, was attempting to make it back into football as a tight end. However, after an ugly first preseason game at the position with several missed blocks and poor decision-making, the Jaguars had seen enough. 

Shortly after his release, Tebow took to Twitter to thank Jacksonville for the opportunity.

"We knew that was an uphill battle for Tim," Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer said. "Players loved him, locker room loved him, but it was the right thing."

Meyer was Tebow’s college coach at the University of Florida.

49ers Waive Rosen

With Jimmy Garoppolo set to start the season under center and third overall pick Trey Lance set to take the reins soon, the San Francisco 49ers waived quarterback Josh Rosen Tuesday. 

Rosen, the 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft, has already spent time with four teams in his NFL career. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, who then traded him to the Miami Dolphins after drafting Kyler Murray. Miami then released Rosen after drafting Tua Tagovailoa.

From there, Rosen joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the practice squad, and the 49ers signed Rosen from there following injuries to Garoppolo, and backup Nick Mullens.

Rosen played most of the second half in last Sunday’s 19-16 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He completed 10-of-15 passes for 95 yards and an interception. 

"I think he started off real well," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said on Aug. 8. "I think he's taken a couple of steps back the last few practices. You know, it was unfortunate on that. We were supposed to go to someone and we had a busted route, so then it kind of fell apart and he tried to overcompensate and he made a bad situation worse."
