Indianapolis Colts at San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview/Player Prop

24 October 2021

The Sunday Night Football matchup in Week 7 will feature the San Francisco 49ers hosting the Indianapolis Colts. Both of these teams were expected to be playoff contenders in 2021, but things have not worked out that way up to this point.

Indianapolis comes into this game with a record of just 2-4 on the year, and they got off to a brutal start. The Colts picked up a 31-3 win over the Houston Texans in Week 6, and that will give them momentum in this one.

San Francisco enters Week 7 with a record of just 2-3, and they are falling out of the NFC West Divisional race. The 49ers had lost three straight games before entering their bye week and will need to bounce back in a hurry.

The San Francisco 49ers are 3.5-point favorites over the Indianapolis Colts in this Week 7 showdown.

Colts Can Get Stops

The overall stats show that the Indianapolis Colts are allowing nearly 22 points per game this season, but the defense can be much better than that. Indianapolis held Houston to just three points a week ago, and they can put up another low number in this game.

Offense has been a problem at times for the Colts, and that unit will have to step up in this game. The overall numbers for Indianapolis aren’t bad, but everything hinges on how well quarterback Carson Wentz can play.

Wentz has thrown for 1,545 yards and nine touchdowns this season, and he is extremely effective when he has time to operate. The Colts will also be looking to establish the run early in this game to open up some holes.

San Francisco Needs Scoring

The San Francisco 49ers are going to have to find a way to score some points if they want to snap this losing streak. San Francisco scored just 31 total points in their last two games combined, and that isn’t going to work on Sunday night.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has thrown just five touchdowns this season while also tossing a pair of interceptions. Rookie quarterback Trey Lance has provided a spark at times, but he isn’t playing in Week 7.

San Francisco has a defensive front that can be disruptive, but that hasn’t always been the case this season. Stopping the run will be the first priority for the 49ers on Sunday.

Colts Complete Upset Win

San Francisco should be prepared for this game after their bye week, but the 49ers were really struggling through Week 5. The 49ers just don’t have enough weapons on the offensive side of the ball, and they are facing a great defensive team in this game.

Indianapolis has some flaws of their own, but they appear to be figuring some things out. The Colts are trending in the right direction, and they are starting to look like a playoff contender once again.

Don’t expect a ton of points in this game, but that plays right into the hands of the Indianapolis Colts on the road. Bet on the Indianapolis Colts moneyline as they find a way to pick up this win and stun the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Player Prop

Carson Wentz (-130) Over 17.5 Pass Completions

Wentz went from an MVP candidate to the bench seemingly overnight in Philadelphia. His fall from grace was so fast and so far that the team traded the one-time franchise savior to the Colts in the off-season.

Indianapolis was hoping that the reunion between Wentz and head coach Frank Reich, who served as Wentz’ OC in Philly in 2016-17, would rekindle some of the magic the former first-round draft pick showed in 2017 when he threw for 33 TDs and only 7 INTs with a rating of 101.9.

It certainly didn’t start out that way for Wentz with his new team. He got hurt in training camp and needed foot surgery. He landed on the Covid list after that, which forced him to miss more practice time, and looked rusty as the Colts started out with three straight losses to open the season.

But since that time, it’s been more like the vintage Wentz. He’s thrown for multiple TDs in three straight games, had a career-high 402 passing yards against the Ravens in Week 5 and posted ratings of 128.5 and 127.7 in his last two games. Not surprisingly, the Colts are 2-1 over that span and playing with much more confidence.

We’ll look for that confidence level to continue to increase tonight and take the new-look Wentz (-130) to go over 17.5 pass completions against the 49ers.
