The Cardinals' Carlos Martinez made a strong statement last night for inclusion on the NL All-Star team as he shut down the Pirates, 4-1, in the series opener. Martinez, who ran his record to 10-3, is one of five players contending for the final spot on the roster, which will be announced later today. Perhaps more importantly, Martinez and the Cards opened a 5 1/2-game lead on the Pirates in the NL Central. Both teams will be back at it tonight as the Pirates send their All-Star Gerrit Cole (12-3, 2.28) to the mound against Lance Lynn (6-4, 2.53).
