The State Farm Champions Classic is set to take place on Tuesday night, and once again, four of the best college basketball programs in the country will take the floor. The second game of the night will feature the Kansas Jayhawks taking on the Duke Blue Devils.
Duke enters the 2022-23 season with a new head coach leading the way, as Jon Scheyer is now the man in charge. The Blue Devils have looked sharp through their first two games, winning by more than 36 points per game.
Kansas is the defending national champions of college basketball, and they are expected to be just as good this season. The Jayhawks are also 2-0 on the young year, and they haven’t really been tested up to this point.
The Kansas Jayhawks are 1.5-point betting favorites in this matchup with the Duke Blue Devils.
Duke Getting it Done on Defense
Duke has obviously faced a pair of bad teams to begin the 2022-23 season, but they have also been extremely dominant on the defensive end of the floor. It’s impressive for a young team to be so good on defense early, and they are allowing just 41.0 points per game.
The defense has led to some easy buckets for Duke in the first two games, but they have struggled at times in the half court. Duke is shooting 45% from the field, but they are going to have to get better from deep.
Forward Mark Mitchell leads the way with 15.5 points per game this season, and Kyle Filipowski is averaging 11 rebounds. Duke has a number of new players that will be ready to make a statement in this one.
Kansas Has Weapons on Offense
The Kansas Jayhawks have been extremely impressive on offense to begin the year, and that trend should continue throughout the year. Kansas is scoring 85.5 points per game so far this season, and they are shooting better than 50 percent.
Forward Jalen Wilson leads the team with 20 points and ten rebounds per game, and he is looking to take on a bigger role with the team this season. Point guard Dajuan Harris has dished out 6.5 assists per game to set the tone for Kansas.
The Jayhawks have given up 61.5 points per game, and they should have been able to lock down the first two opponents. Kansas will face a tough test on defense in this matchup.
Blue Devils Beat the Jayhawks
This game will have the feel of a potential championship game preview, and there will be a ton of future NBA stars on the court. The one thing that will be missing is Kansas head coach Bill Self, and that could end up playing a role in this game.
Duke just has so much size and athleticism to throw at Kansas, and they are going to make life difficult for the Jayhawks on offense. This will be a game that is going to come down to the wire, but it will be Duke that figures out a way to pick up a win.
