Cleveland Browns at Los Angeles Chargers Betting Preview/Player Prop
10 October 2021
We have already reached Week 5 of the NFL season, and some of the best teams in the league have started to separate from the pack. Two of these top teams will meet up on Sunday as the Los Angeles Chargers host the Cleveland Browns in a big game.
Cleveland suffered a four-point loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1, but they have since won three straight games. The Browns were a playoff team a season ago, and they look like a threat to win the AFC North this season.
The Los Angeles Chargers are also 3-1 on the year, and they just picked up an impressive win on Monday night in Week 4. Los Angeles is hoping to end a long playoff drought, and they appear to have the talent to get it done.
The Los Angeles Chargers are slim one-point favorites over the Cleveland Browns in this Week 5 NFL matchup.
Browns Bullying Teams With the Run
The Cleveland Browns are averaging 177 rushing yards per game, and they have a pair of running backs that are doing some major damage. Nick Chubb leads the way with 362 rushing yards, but Kareem Hunt has been terrific as well.
There are some injury concerns for quarterback Baker Mayfield, and he has struggled at times this season. Mayfield has thrown for just 935 yards and two touchdowns, and the Browns will have to find offensive balance in this game.
The defense of the Browns has the ability to completely shut down an opponent, and they are going to get pressure on the quarterback. Look for Cleveland to put up another solid defensive effort in this game.
Herbert Playing Hero For Chargers
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is on the shortlist of MVP candidates this season as he has thrown for close to 300 yards per game. Herbert already has nine touchdown passes, and he also does a great job of taking care of the ball.
Los Angeles is led by Austin Ekeler in the run game, and he is going to be a major key in this game. The Chargers' offensive line will have to create some running room and give Herbert some time to operate.
It has been the defense that has been the biggest surprise for Los Angeles as they are allowing less than 19 points per game. The Chargers are giving up 140 rushing yards per game, and that could be a problem against Cleveland.
Cleveland Continues to Roll
Even though both teams have been scoring it well so far this season, don't expect a ton of offense in this game. Each team will be looking to take control with their defense, and that is where the Browns have a pretty sizable advantage.
The Browns have been absolutely dominant against the run all season long, and that's going to put too much pressure on Justin Herbert to deliver. There are still some concerns about the Browns' ability to throw the football, but Cleveland will get just enough offense on Sunday afternoon.
Bet the Cleveland Browns moneyline on Sunday afternoon as the road team is able to pick up a big win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Justin Herbert (-205) Over 1.5 Passing TDs
Herbert continues to follow up an impressive rookie campaign by leading the Chargers offensive attack. Through the first four weeks of the regular season, the 23-year-old QB ranks ninth in the league in passing yards (1,178) and sixth in TD passes (9).
Much of that has come in the last two weeks as Herbert has thrown for 7 TD passes against zero INTs in back-to-back wins over division rivals Kansas City and Las Vegas.
He’ll be facing by far his toughest defense of the season as the Browns rank fourth in points allowed (16.8 ppg) and third in passing (183.8 ypg). However, the defense is even stingier against the run, allowing just 66.5 ypg, which is also third in the league.
That leaves few options for LA head coach Brandon Staley other than relying on his young QB to continue to produce. In a tight game, we’ll count on Herbert (-205) to break through a few times and go over 1.5 TD passes.
