CFL Rundown/Week 3 Picks

August 19

Edmonton at BC

Lions quarterback Mike Reilly went off in Week 2, throwing for 342 yards while his defense had four interceptions en route to a road win over Calgary. QB Trevor Harris wasn’t as bad for the Elks last weekend, but Edmonton still remains winless. Considering the Elks still maintain a dominant offense on paper and BC doesn’t possess many veterans on defense, I like Edmonton and the points on Thursday night in Vancouver.

Montreal at Calgary

Time: 9:30 pm ET

If you watched the first two games of Calgary’s season, you knew something was off with QB Bo-Levi Mitchell. Mitchell has since been placed on the six-game IL with a broken fibula, and the reeling Stamps will now turn to 25-year-old backup Michael O’Connor. Dual threat Vernon Adams is doing everything the Alouettes hoped Johnny Manziel would’ve, and the Alouettes finally look like they have a long term answer at quarterback.

Taking Montreal as a plus money dog here is a steal.

Winnipeg at Toronto

Vegas Line & Total: Winnipeg by 7; 42 ½

Toronto has an unbelievable ceiling thanks to their revamped defense, but the Blue Bombersare the defending Grey Cup champs for a reason. Through two weeks, Winnipeg’s defense has only surrendered a total of 13 points, and QB Zach Collaros looks comfortable at the helm in his first full season with the Bombers. Whether it be Nick Arbuckle or McLeod Bethel-Thompson starting under center for the Argos, this should be another comfortable win for the Bombers. They are far and away the best team in the CFL right now. 

Dunkel Pick: Winnipeg (-7); Over

Ottawa at Saskatchewan

Time: 7:00 pm ET

Dunkel Ratings: Ottawa 107.354; Saskatchewan 114.584

Vegas Line & Total: Saskatchewan by 11 ½; 46 ½

Ottawa was a complete disaster offensively in Week 1, mustering up only seven first downs and 71 yards passing. Paul LaPolice’s team still managed to come out on top, however, and are now coming off an early bye week where they’ve been able to fix their offensive woes. 

Saskatchewan is 2-0 but their record is quite deceiving. The Riders nearly blew a 28-0 lead in their home opener, and QB Cody Fajardo has been underwhelming in his first two starts. Look for the Riders to regress a little, and for the Redblacks to make it a one-score game in Regina.
