CFL Week 5 Betting Preview

05 July 2023 By Cole Paganelli

After a shortened schedule during Week 4 of the season, the CFL is back with four games in Week 5. A majority of the teams in the league have now had a bye, and that makes the playoff races more interesting.

This league still has one undefeated team left standing, and there are two teams still looking for their first win. Here is a look at each of the four games in Week 5, with a Dunkel pick and prediction for each game.

Edmonton Elks at Saskatchewan Roughriders

The 0-4 Edmonton Elks visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders to kick off the Week 5 action, and this spread is pretty large, as you could imagine. It’s hard to predict a worse start for the Elks, and going on the road to face the Roughriders isn’t going to be fun.

Saskatchewan has actually been outscored this season despite being 2-1, but they are a team that can get stops on defense. That unit will have a big game in this one, as Edmonton is not a good offensive team.

Take the Roughriders to cover the 7.5-point betting spread in this one.

Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are another big betting favorite in Week 5, as they are 8.5-point favorites over the Calgary Stampeders. Winnipeg currently sits atop the West Division with a 3-1 record, but they have had some close wins along the way.

Calgary should actually be better than their 1-2 record if you look at the overall numbers, and this team has proven that it can slow games down. That will have to be the strategy in this matchup, and it is going to cause some real problems for Winnipeg.

Calgary is an 8.5-point underdog in this game, but you should actually bet on them to pull off the upset win in this matchup.

Ottawa RedBlacks at Hamilton Tiger-Cats

The 1-2 Ottawa RedBlacks visit the 0-3 Hamilton Tiger-Cats in an interesting matchup in the East Division. Hamilton is actually a three-point betting favorite in this game, despite being winless so far on the year.

Ottawa has been great on defense throughout the 2023 season, as they have allowed just 52 total points. The same can’t be said for Hamilton, as they have given up nearly 40 points per game.

The RedBlacks are a surprising underdog in this matchup, and they are going to go on the road and pick up a win.

Montreal Alouettes at BC Lions

The final games of the week might be the best one as the 3-1 BC Lions host the 2-1 Montreal Alouettes. This is a matchup of two teams that get the job done in very different ways, and BC is a big seven-point favorite in this one.

Montreal has scored just 20 points per game this season, but they have held opponents to just over 13 points per game. BC wants to speed this game up, as they have scored 101 points through their first four games.

This is going to be a great battle, and it’s one that should remain tight. For that reason, taking the seven points and backing Montreal is the play, but it will be BC that gets the win.
