Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2022 Betting Preview

26 October 2022 By Tyler Vaysman

The 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship kicks off a two-week stretch of international events for the PGA Tour. This is the fourth year that the tournament has taken place; all played at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda. The tournament play begins on Thursday, October 27th, and ends on Sunday, October 30th.

Originally an alternate event tournament to the WGC-HSBC, the Bermuda Championship was elevated to a full FedEx point event after the cancellation of the WGC-HSBC in back-to-back years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lucas Herbert is the defending champion but won’t be making the trip to defend his title this week. Herbert won his first PGA Tour event with a 15-under par, defeating Danny Lee and Patrick Reed by one stroke for the victory.

The Field

Many of the top players in the world were in action last week at the CJ CUP in South Carolina and won’t tee it up again until next year. This gives players who aren’t ranked as high a prime opportunity to gather as many FedEx Cup points as possible over the next month.

Seamus Power is the only player in the field currently ranked inside the Top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Other recent PGA Tour winners in the field include Chad Ramey and Garrick Higgo. Bill Haas, a past FedEx champion, is another notable pro in the field.

The Course

Port Royal Golf Club is a par-71 golf course that measures 6,828 yards and runs along the Atlantic Coast. The layout was designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened for play in 1970. It is the longest course on the island of Bermuda.

Potential Winning Pick

There are a lot of golfers in the field searching for their first PGA Tour victory, and many with a good chance. This week we are going with Denny McCarthy (-42.140) to earn his first PGA Tour victory.

The 29-year-old has cashed in on three of four cuts this season, his best being a T25 at the Fortinet Championship in Napa to start the new season. McCarthy has played here all three years, finishing T15, T4, and T39 over that span.

Prop Pick

Justin Lower (Top 20)

Most books have Lower at plus-money to finish in the top 20. We have him projected as our third favorite to win the tournament.

We like that value, and Lower’s recent play suggests his game is trending in the right direction. In three tournaments played this fall, the 33-year-old has made every cut with a pair of T20 highlighted by a T4 finish at the Fortinet Championship.
