Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners Betting Preview/Player Prop
14 September 2021
The Seattle Mariners host the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night for a critical game in the American League Wild Card race. Seattle took the series opener over Boston by a score of 5-4 and will look to put even more pressure on with a win.
Boston is now tied with the New York Yankees for the final AL Wild Card spot, but it has been a rough few weeks for the Red Sox. This team has gone just 37-36 away from home this season, and playing in Seattle is a big challenge.
The Mariners come into this game with a record of 78-66, and they are now just two games out of a playoff spot. Seattle has gone 42-31 at home in 2021, and they need to make up ground while playing on their home turf.
The Boston Red Sox are -141 in this matchup against the Seattle Mariners.
Red Sox Need More Offense
The Boston Red Sox are dealing with a number of COVID-19 issues, and that has really affected the offense. Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers are the two leaders on this offense, but the Red Sox will need a more complete attack in this game.
Boston just hasn’t been able to string together enough hits of late, and that could be a potential problem in this game. It is going to take some scoring to knock off the Mariners, and playing without some stars makes this difficult.
Nathan Eovaldi has been one of the top pitchers for the Red Sox this season, and he will be on the mound Tuesday night. Eovaldi has the ability to shut down the Mariners, and that could take some pressure off of the offense.
Seattle Scoring Some Runs
The Mariners are hitting just .226 as a team this season, but they have shown the ability to come up with some clutch hits. Seattle has enjoyed plenty of success at home, and much of that success has been done at the plate.
Kyle Seager is the leader of this offense, and Seager has been coming up with all of the clutch hits for this team. Facing Eovaldi is not going to be easy, but the Mariners have some momentum that could push them through.
The pitching staff for Seattle has been just good enough, even though they traded away their closer at the deadline. The Mariners are catching a massive break while playing Boston as they are dealing with so many issues.
Mariners Beat Boston Again
The Boston Red Sox will have one of their best pitchers on the mound for this game, but they are facing an offense that is pretty red-hot. Seattle does not overwhelm opponents with offense, but they have been able to find just enough scoring to take control.
This is going to be a terrific playoff race all the way down the stretch in the American League, and both Boston and Seattle will remain in the mix. It will be the Mariners that keep the pressure on Boston with another big win.
Bet the Seattle Mariners moneyline as they pick up a win over the Boston Red Sox for the second straight night.
Player Prop
J.D. Martinez (-330) Over 0.5 Hits
It’s been a tough stretch for the Red Sox, who have had to deal with a myriad of COVID issues and also a non-COVID back injury that sidelined Martinez for three straight games over the weekend.
It’s hard enough to take his bat (.286, 25 HRs, 89 RBI) out of the lineup, but to lose it in the midst of an intense playoff chase is a huge void. Not surprisingly, the Red Sox dropped two of those games against the White Sox.
Manager Alex Cora was able to pencil Martinez’ name back into the lineup last night, but he didn’t get the production he was hoping for as the leftfielder went 0-for-3. Still, he has to like the fact that the last two times Martinez has been held hitless, he’s responded with multi-hit games against the Rays and Indians.
We’ll look for that trend to continue tonight and take Martinez (-330) to pick up at least one hit versus the Mariners.
