Boston Celtics at New York Knicks Betting Preview

06 January 2022

Thursday, January 06th Boston Celtics @ New York Knicks

The Boston Celtics are 18-20 heading into their game on Thursday night. They’re at the No.10 spot in the Eastern Conference but are a few games back from moving up. The New York Knicks are right behind them, which means the Celtics can’t afford to lose this one. The good news is that the Celtics should be able to add some players back into the lineup on Thursday.

The New York Knicks are just outside of the top ten in the Eastern Conference. This game against the Celtics would be huge for positioning in the conference. Unfortunately, two of their point guards will be out for this matchup. Kemba Walker has officially been ruled out and Derrick Rose is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. So, who’s the best bet in this Thursday showdown?

Boston Celtics: Needing Help From Brown and Tatum

The Boston Celtics and the term “inconsistent” go hand in hand this season. They lost a few nights ago to the San Antonio Spurs but before that beat the Magic 116-111. As they head to New York, the Celtics need help from their superstars. They have two of the best scorers in the NBA in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Both of them need to step up their game on Thursday.

Brown scored a whopping 50 points against Orlando and put up 30 against the Spurs. However, the biggest problem was Jayson Tatum shooting 6-20 and putting up 19 points. This is just another example of the Celtics not being able to show consistency. The Knicks might not have the same scorers as the Celtics, but Randle and Barrett are some tough competition.

New York Knicks: Defense is Priority No.1

Getting Jayson Tatum out of his rhythm isn’t too complicated to do. Jaylen Brown, on the other hand, is a different story. Evan Fournier will be the player tasked with guarding Jaylen Brown, but others will provide help. Brown is dangerous from beyond the three-point line, so shutting that down is step one. From there, they’ll need to funnel Brown inside where big bodies await.

On the offensive side of the ball, Julius Randle will need to make a big impact. RJ Barrett is another player we’d like to see contribute as well. Unfortunately, Barrett will likely be guarded by Jayson Tatum on Thursday night. Although Tatum hasn’t been great from the field lately, he’s quite the defender. It might be tough for Barrett to put up a lot of points in tonight’s game.

Dunkel Index Pick for Celtics-Knicks

There are a couple of injuries on each side, but the Knicks are the most impacted. They’ll be down their best point guards Kemba Walker and Derrick Rose. Still, they only come in as one-point underdogs and we definitely like these odds. The Celtics have been terrible against the spread lately, going 1-4 ATS in their last five games.

Boston is going to prove on Thursday they’re the better team. We’ve got the Celtics to win by 12.
