Atlanta Hawks at Los Angeles Lakers Betting Preview

07 January 2022

Friday, January 07th Atlanta Hawks @ Los Angeles Lakers

The Atlanta Hawks have had quite the roller coaster over the last few weeks. They’re coming off of a win over the Sacramento Kings, but before that, they lost to the Trail Blazers. Now the Los Angeles Lakers are their next opponent, and both teams need a win.

As of today, there are three players listed as “out” for the Hawks. PG Trae Young could see himself added to this list as well.

If the Los Angeles Lakers can get a win at home here, it would make their fourth straight home victory. This season, the Lakers have gone 13-10 at home but haven’t done well against the spread. They’re only small favorites here; just a 2.5-point margin separates the two teams.

The question is, with LeBron James on the “day-to-day” list, can the Lakers win without him?

Atlanta Hawks: Injuries continue to plague the Atlanta Hawks

If there’s one thing holding the Hawks back from more wins, it’s injuries. As of today, two of the five starters have been ruled out, Bogdan Bogdanovic and John Collins. There is a chance that Trae Young will be missing as well as he deals with a back issue.

Hopefully, Atlanta can get them back in the lineup, but the outlook is dim. However, a few bench players have stepped up.

In their recent game against the Kings, starting SF Kevin Huerter stepped up and scored 25-points. If the Hawks want to get this win over the Lakers, they’ll need a similar game from Huerter and Capela.

They have one of the worst defenses in the NBA, allowing 111.0 points per game. Without a few starting players, the offense will bear most of the burden to win this one.

Los Angeles Lakers: Potentially no LeBron James in this one

As most already know, Anthony Davis is out indefinitely with an MCL injury. Unfortunately for the Lakers, LeBron James is dealing with an abdominal issue and is day-to-day.

If LeBron is missing from the lineup, they’ll yet again rely on Russell Westbrook. Westbrook’s turnovers have been a big topic of conversation, especially after a nine-turnover game.

He bounced back from that awful outing by committing zero turnovers against the Kings. However, he won’t be able to take down the Hawks on his own. He’s not the best scorer, nor does he have a great field-goal percentage.

Still, the Lakers have the sixth-highest scoring offense in the NBA, averaging 111.26 ppg. The question is, can they cover the 2.5-point spread?

Our pick for the Atlanta Hawks at Los Angeles Lakers

Both of these teams have been awful against the spread this season. The Atlanta Hawks have a 15-22 record, while the Lakers are 16-23.

Considering neither of them is very trustworthy, we have to look at different variables. For instance, the Los Angeles record of 13-10 at home and three straight home wins.

The Hawks have a 9-11 record on the road this season and have gone 8-12 ATS on the road. As underdogs, they’re 5-10 while the Lakers are 16-10 as favorites. Taking all of that into account, we’ll take the Lakers to win this game by 5.5, covering the 2.5-point spread.
