Arizona State Sun Devils vs Wisconsin Badgers Las Vegas Bowl Betting Preview
30 December 2021
— Thursday, December 30th Wisconsin Badgers @ Arizona State Sun Devils
The Las Vegas Bowl features two unsuspected teams this year. The Arizona State Sun Devils take on the Wisconsin Badgers on Thursday night. The Sun Devils might be slightly less shocking than the Badgers, but for a different reason.
We’re sure that plenty of people didn’t believe Arizona would face the Badgers in a bowl game. However, here they are.
The season for the Wisconsin Badgers didn’t turn out how they wanted it. Still, they’re playing in a bowl game, which is a good way to end the season.
They come in as 6.5-point favorites in this game, and most see them winning this game handily. However, we don’t believe the Sun Devils will be so easy to walk over. Let’s go over our reasoning for this and what we expect to see.
Arizona State Sun Devils: A “run-first” might not be wise
The Sun Devils have a fairly good offense in terms of rushing the ball and scoring. They average 204.5 rushing yards per game, fifth in college football. They score, on average, 34.2 points per game, ranking 55th in the nation.
These are quite good statistics, considering how many teams there are in college football. The question is, can this offense work well against the Badgers?
The Wisconsin Badgers have the No.1 rushing defense in all of college football. On average, the Badgers only allow 65.17 yards per game. Their 8-4 record is more indicative of their offensive struggles than their defense.
The Sun Devils might need to rely on their passing game slightly more on Thursday. If not, the Wisconsin defense could have a field day stuffing the run.
Wisconsin Badgers: Will their offense support their defense?
The reason why the Badgers didn’t see much success this year was the lack of offense. They had one of the best defenses in the nation, without the offense to match.
We think this lackluster offense could potentially pose a problem on Thursday as well. Their leading receiver only has 478 receiving yards this year. With no passing threat, the Las Vegas Bowl could be a lot closer.
In order to win the game, they’ll need to find a way to put up points against Arizona State. The Sun Devils passing defense is pretty good, allowing just 184.31 yards per game.
Their overall defense only allows an average of 19.31 points per game, 20th in college football. The Badgers have their hands full, and 6.5 points might be too much for them to cover on Thursday night.
Our pick for the Sun Devils versus the Badgers
The Wisconsin Badgers are 6-6 against the spread, which isn’t bad. However, the fact that they have one of the most sluggish offenses we’ve seen doesn’t help.
They’ll need to cover 6.5-points on Thursday, essentially a touchdown. We don’t see the Badgers being able to come up with the points to cover on Thursday.
That being said, we’ll take the Sun Devils to cover the spread in the Las Vegas Bowl. They have a great offensive and defensive combo and aren’t bad against the spread.
They’ve gone 8-2 ATS in their last ten games against opponents from the Big Ten as well. We’ll also take the over here, considering it’s fairly low.
